SMSC at Winston

Spiritual, Moral, Social and Cultural

Integral to Winston

Year 7 Work

Year 7 students produced some superb work regarding religions of the world.  Each student had the opportunity to present their work in an original format.  They demonstrated the ability to reseach and to analyse the information available to them.  Having made a selection of the most relevant information they set about reproducing the work in a style that is eye catching and interesting.  Well done Year 7!

 Team Super Schools

On Thursday 16th October Winston played host to Goldie Sayers, a three time British Olympian.  Goldie is the British Javelin record holder.  Students were able to meet her and have a picture taken.  Years 7 and 8 then completed a number of physical activities raising money through sponsorship for the charity, as well as the school.

The PE Prefects and staff were on hand to motivate students to do their best and the Year 7 and 8 students threw themselves into the task of completing as many repetitions as possible.

 Motivating Our Learners

Some students in Years 8 and 9 had the opportunity to attend a motivational session with an outside speaker from Made Education.  The aim was to look at how to become a successful learner by identifying the barriers or distractions and coming up with strategies to aviod them in the future.

Celebrating Dancing Success

One of our students will be performing in Swan Lake with the English Youth Ballet at the Rhoda McGaw Theatre in Woking in November.  Lauren is a GCSE Dance student and we wish her every success in the production and hope to have some photographs for a future blog.

Levi Roots at Winston

Inspiring our Students

Levi Roots came to Winston with the intention of inspiring our students through food, music and what it is to be an entrepreneur.  The visit was arranged by Mrs Vadi, who ensured that Levi would have maximum impact across the school by working with students from the Business Department, the Music Department and finally in Food Technology.  Levi even gave an inpromptu performance at break in the main hall, which was appreciated by all the staff and the students.

 Levi said:
"I really enjoyed my visit to the wonderful Winston Churchill School. I was inspired by the passion demonstrated by both staff and students. I loved jamming with the music crew and we had a great time cooking my fabulicious jerk chicken together too!"

I would like to thank Mrs Vadi for ensuring that Winston students were able to benefit from Levi's experience in the world of business, food and music, by demonstrating that the work we do in school can be applied to life beyond education.

I am delighted to announce that following a number of remarks our overall results have risen and now stand at

This is great news for individual students and for the school and reflects the hard work and dedication of our staff team and our students.

To Kill a Mockingbird

Wednesday 8th October:
New Victoria Theatre, Woking
On Wednesday 8th October, Mrs. Warburg-Gurel, Miss. Ruffle and Mr. Chandler took a group of 30, year 9 students to see the stage adaptation of Harper Lee’s ‘To Kill a Mockingbird’ at the New Victoria theatre, in Woking. The timeless classic was considerately and sensitively adapted for performance and all who attended came away moved by incredible performances all round. From chuckling at Scout’s naivety to feeling the pain of Tom Robinson, the play (as does the novel) took the audience on an emotional rollercoaster. The novel centres round the theme of empathy and putting aside prejudices to truly value the individual.
“You never really know a man until you stand in his shoes and walk around in them” – Atticus Finch
Despite the text’s removal from the GCSE Literature exam, Winston still feels that the text teaches the students valuable life lessons on community and morality which can be applied to modern day life.
This challenging and inspiring text will be taught to three year 9 groups, in their English lessons this year.
“I found ‘To Kill a Mockingbird’ very enjoyable and found the treatment of some of the characters, very unfair.” – Sam Sliwinski, year 9
“I found the show very interesting and it will help me understand it when we read the book in class.” – Laura Hamilton, year 9

Wet Break

Our first wet break of the academic year proved to be interesting!  Students were given classroom bases for each Year Groupand they had the use of the Main Hall and the Sports Hall for Active Break.  Not everyone remembered where they should be but still enjoyed the social time and as students become more familar with the routines they will perhaps use the library or the sports centre during future wet breaks!

Inset Day: Britishness!

The whole staff were presented with the vision for learning at Winston and then had the opportunity to hone their debating skills with staff across the departments.  The government have clearly stated that schools must help students to understand British Values and what it means to be British.  The departments then went onto look at how these elements can be integrated into lessons, using the spiritual, moral, social and cultural (SMSC) agenda as a framework.
