Celebrating Duke of Edinburgh Awards
The annual celebration of the Duke of Edinburgh Awards was held at The HG Wells Centre in Woking on Tuesday 22nd March. Winston has the largest cohort of Bronze participants and staff and students enjoyed the recognition of their success. Although the official photographs have yet to be released, I thought that you might enjoy the images below.
Well done to everyone who successful completes all the elements of the award and a huge thank you to our staff who ensure that students have the opportunity to take part.
Maths Feast
On Tuesday a team of Year 10 students went to Surrey
university in Guildford to compete in the “Maths Feast”. They competed against
many other schools in difficult rounds such as interpreting complex numbers (a
topic they have never studied!) and problem solving. The team won the whole
competition, an amazing achievement!
The organisers have said the students were a “credit to the
school” and “it was lovely to see their enthusiasm for the subject”.
We also received the following message:
'Just a quick email following this event today. I had
the pleasure to spend the afternoon supervising the team representing your
school, and was delighted that they deservedly won the competition. It
was also lovely to see their enthusiasm for Mathematics, and their courteous
and polite approach. I wish them all the best with their Mathematics and
GCSEs next year.'

Well done to Laura, Josh, Callum and Juhi!
Rugby Sevens
Mr Briggs has organised and run sevens tournaments all this week, with a large number of schools participating from across Surrey. It was great to see so many teams, of all ages, converging on Winston to enjoy great sport and team spirit. Thank you to everyone who took part and to Mr Briggs for developing and running the event.
Please see attached a photo of the year 10 boys before the final
yesterday.
Eclipse
A new play by Simon Armitage, was performed as part of the National; Theatre Connections Festival. We have been invited to take part in this festival for the second year running, one of the very few secondary schools in the country, following a successful application. As stated on their website 'Connections is the National Theatre’s annual festival of new plays for youth theatres and schools. Connections gives young people experience of professional theatre-making. Their experience mirrors that of a company producing a new play in any theatre in the country.'
Students have performed the play at school twice during the last week of the spring term and are now ready to perform it on 4th May at The Lyric Theatre, Hammersmith. The play has been directed by Mr Penfold and Mr Harrington-Tucker and they have ensured that the performances have showcased the talent of our students. We wish them every success.
'Huge congratulations to Todd Harrington-Tucker and Thom
Penfold on their outstanding directorial debuts with their production of ‘Eclipse’,
performed in school as part of the 2016 National Theatre Connections Festival.
Sam Pritchard, one of the National Theatre directors who
came and saw the show last night, said of the production, “This is one of the
most vivid and descriptive productions of ‘Eclipse’ that I have ever
seen…a brilliant production,,, beautifully synthesised together…”'
