Fishy Skills

 Filleting Fish

"🐟 Our year 10 students showed off their ever-improving knife skills by filleting whole fish, under the expert guidance of Chef Kevin from the Winston Catering Team, Pablum. They managed to quickly get both fillets removed and we think it went swimmingly. 🐟"

Experiencing University Life

 University of Reading: Classics Department

Year 8 Latinists attended a Classics Taster Day at the University of Reading this week. We've made gemstone charms imbued with magic, scraped the surface of Egyptian hieroglyphs, and considered the modern misconceptions of race in the Roman world.

A tour of the university allowed students to explore a lot of the student spaces here: the Student Union, library and museums. Students particularly enjoyed the all-you-can-eat hot buffet lunch!

We're looking forward to next half term when students will experience university style teaching with a visiting Royal Holloway Classics professor.

Maths the Winston Way

Problem Solving our Way to the Top

Four of our Year 10 mathematicians proudly represented Winston in a maths competition on Wednesday 18th January, held at Woking college.

These students were selected after an in-house maths challenge took place between 11 eager year 10 students, all wanting to take part in the competition. The afternoon revolved around high level maths and problem-solving challenges, where each school was awarded points for how well they did. We managed to finish second which is a massive achievement for the students, especially considering we had little knowledge of how the competition would be set up.

I am very proud of these students. They worked hard, worked well as a team, and bought an overall positive attitude towards this event. I hope these students will help me coach the next year 10's to a first place finish!

Participation, Whatever the Weather

 Birdwatching

'On Tuesday morning, 'Eco club' took part in a rather rainy bird watch. Every year RSPB organise a 'Big Garden Birdwatch' to see how many bird species can be found in different counties across the UK.

Thank you to all students who got involved and took on the weather!'

A Textile Challenge

 Creative use of Textiles

My year 9 textiles students were asked to choose from a range of artists to inspire their work, and the Japanese artist Takashi Murakami proved to be a particularly popular choice. Others selected artists known for their use of repeat patterns, giving the group a diverse creative starting point. It was wonderful to see every student fully engaged, developing their skills through a wide variety of textile techniques and showing real enthusiasm for experimenting and improving.

National Cup

 Tough Competition, Great Experience

Having beaten last years National 'B' Cup semi-finalists Weydon 4-2 in the previous round, our Year 11 B team were now drawn away vs. Millfield School. Millfield are known as one of the best football schools in the country with many UEFA A coaches and Premier League standard pitches.

The conditions for the game was the worst it's ever been, with side ways rain and 50mph winds. Despite this, Winston more than matched the opposition and were unfortunate to go into half time 1-0 down. As the second half conditions got worse and with the wind against us it was difficult for the team to form any sort of attack. However, with 20 minutes to go Riley was able to slot in an equaliser. It wasn't until the last 5 minutes that Millfield created a decent chance which they converted. As Winston tried to push forward and get an equaliser in the last dying minutes Millfield caught us on the counter attack to get a 3rd, finishing 3-1.

I am incredibly proud of the attitude, commitment and desire of this group throughout their cup run but especially in this fixture, representing Winston fantastically. It may be the end of the road for the group but they can hold their heads high having reached the last 16 schools in the country!

Technology Groups in Action

Creating a Delicious Meal

My year 8 students created a delicious chicken and mushroom sauce to serve with pasta, showcasing an impressive range of skills including making a white sauce, chopping, slicing, and sautéing.

They demonstrated strong organisation as they worked, clearing away efficiently while showing excellent communication, resilience, and teamwork. Robyn even took her sauce home to turn it into her own version of a chicken pie, as shown in the photograph.

Adults who tasted the dishes were full of praise and offered thoughtful recommendations. In Home Technology, students are encouraged to evaluate their practical outcomes so they can continue to develop and refine their skills.
