Winston Welcomes New Students

Welcome to our New Year 7!

It was great to welcome so many of our new students to Winston for their Induction Days this week.  All were dressed in their Winston PE kit and were certainly keen to experience what Winston has to offer.  We started with an assembly and this gave our students the opportunity to understand what it means to belong to this year group and our expectations. The students then experienced different lessons throughout the day and enjoyed a delicious lunch prepared by our catering company.

Lining up for assembly.
Listening to Mrs Smith, Year Leader.
Peer Mentors.

A coding lesson with Mr Falleiro.
Maths problem solving with Miss Hazelwood.
Maths problem solving with Mr Walker.

Day two presented us with a new challenge, the builders cut through the mains water supply and then the race was on to fix it, ensuring that we had sufficient water to complete the day.

Thank you to Mrs Smith and her team for organising two great days and to our staff who agreed to come in during the holiday.  You have all made a difference.

Summer School

 Summer School

Miss Singleton and her team have organised a full programme for some of our new Winston students. This week, new year seven students have been attending school for those summer sessions. They have had an action packed couple of days. On the first day, they had drama sessions and spent time making pizza. The day culminated with brilliant performances from all students.

On the second day, students spent time in the library and planetarium, where they asked really interesting questions about different planets in the solar system. They also played problem solving maths games and spent time, in teams, on the school field playing football.

Congratulations Year 11

 2021 Results

It has been a tough year for our students and they have had to show high levels of determination and resilience to achieve in this year's public examinations.  Everyone, students, staff and parents, are to be congratulated for their hard work in ensuring successful outcomes. Your experience at Winston has been unique; during this final year each one of you managed a whole range of feelings and challenges.

Year 11 have not let the year of the pandemic define you; you have overcome so much more than other students at this stage in their educational journey and achieved great results.

Well done Winston!

Inspiring Science

 Valuable Life Lesson

7CS had the opportunity today to combine their creative writing skills with some essential life skills in science. The students were read a fragment from the book  'The Firework- maker's daughter ' by Philip Pullman. Then Dr Gonzalez demonstrated the chip pan fire being  extinguished with water. 7CS witnessed first hand the hazards of using water on oil fires. The flames inspired some colourful adjectives in their work.

Identifying Metal Ions

This week 7CS and 7WN were introduced to the concept of identifying metal ions. Mr Spain used ethanol mixed with metal salts on sugar cubes to demonstrate the excited state of the atoms when heated. Students were able to observe the colours typical for the individual metal ions from orange to green.

Year 8 Science Lessons

8CS had their final Science lesson today. This involved creating rockets and making predictions. Students had great fun taking it in turns to pump, support, release and chase their rockets.

8WG had one of their final science lessons burning food to see how different types of food containing starch and glucose release energy at different speeds. They are now experts at setting up and using Bunsen burners after all the practice they have had this year.
