Mark Damazar at Winston
We were delighted to welcome back Mark Damanzer, Master of St Peter's College, Oxford. Mark spoke to both Year 9 and 10 students about the value of a university education and the key factors that will make a difference when applying to some of our top institutions.
Some of our most able students were able to have a question and answer session and this was followed by a radio interview conducted by the senior prefects. The programme was on air on Monday afternoon but there is a link below to enable you to access the interview.

I would like to thank Mark for spending his time with our students and making his message accessible to all, that is to aspire to be the best you can be and enjoy learning.
Year 10 Enterprise Day
Students in Year 10 also enjoyed an Enterprise Day experience, considering the skills required in the world of work. This is well-timed, as students will be out on work experience next week and employers have again stated that British children are not developing the necessary skills for the woprk place. As you can see below our students were learning about the communication skills required for the work place, including telephone calls dealing with complaints and sales. The calls were recorded and played back to analyse the responses and the effectiveness of the communication. Other areas covered included CVs and interviews.
Hot Weather
Please ensure that your son/daughter comes to school with plenty of water to drink during this exceptional hot spell of weather.
Surrey County Council have provided the following advice:
WEATHER
FORECASTS
Attention
should be given to hot weather warnings and notice taken of the maximum times
advised for exposure to the sun. Staff
should be aware of this, particularly for activities taking place during 11
a.m. - 3 p.m. when the sun is at its strongest.
Sunblock - Pupils and young people should be encouraged to
protect themselves by using sunblock when they are likely to be exposed to the
sun.
PROVISION OF SHADE
Adequate
shade should be available to pupils and young people so they can have access to
a cooler area and are not exposed to UV radiation for excessive periods.
LIQUIDS
It
may be necessary for teachers and supervisors to ensure that access to liquids
is available at the end of lessons/activities when the weather is hot. Water is
recommended. (Fizzy drinks are not permitted at Winston.)
SPORTS
DAYS
Sports Day may need to be postponed unless very good facilities exist to keep
students cool. Shaded, cooler areas are essential for spectators and
competitors alike.
STAFF
Staff
must also be considered and should not be called upon to undertake unreasonable
additional duties during heatwaves.
