Friday at Winston

Celebration Assembly

Our staff have enjoyed supporting the children of Key Workers, over the last few months and this morning the Year Leaders were keen to recognise the contribution that each child has made to the programme.  Therefore, they planned an assembly aimed at celebrating success.

Making Progress

This new facility will be ready for the first day of the Autumn Term.

Music in Lockdown!

                           Music Making during Lockdown

We may not have been able to have our Summer Concert or Winston Young Musician of the Year, as the result of Covid 19 but our music making goes on and the plans for next year are taking shape.

During the lockdown period Mr Drake asked students if they would like to contribute to some recordings for the Music Department and below are the results. The students who took part were asked to record their part for Blame It On The Boogie and/or Allegro (from 3 Dances by Diabelli) to a backing track and then email them over so that they could be put together. The two mp3 recordings involved over 30 students from years 7-11. A special mention has to go to Ethan Fleming (Y11) who sent Mr Drake 13 different tracks that included two vocal parts, two bass recordings and an assortment of percussion parts!

I am sure that you will enjoy the following performances:

The department also put together two video performances for the recent National School Sports Week. Attached is the student performance video, of the Olympic Fanfare by John Williams.

For this recording students could either submit a video file or an audio file of their playing which were then combined. For some of the students involved in this video it was the first time that they had taken part in a musical event at Winston which was fantastic to see.

Not to be left out, the Music Department staff, including a number of our visiting instrumental teachers, also had a go at putting together a video, performing Chariots of Fire.

Hello Year 6!!

             Year 6 into 7 Induction!

We have had an amazing response to the Induction Package, produced by Mrs Smith and Mr Harrington-Tucker.  have you seen it yet?  Go to our website and click on 'Year 6 Transition  Take a Look'.

Of course there is just one thing missing and that is an experience in school.

I asked my staff if there would be any volunteers to give up their holiday to plan and run an induction day and I was overwhelmed by the response.

Therefore, I am delighted to say that Year 6 can join us for a two day Induction Package on:

Tuesday 25th August and Wednesday 26th August.

I feel that it’s that it is important for the children to have the opportunity to be in their new school, before the start of term, when everyone else will join us.  You will be able to wear your Winston PE kit and lunch will be provided.

If you want to join us for the Induction days, please email office@wcsc.org.uk providing your name.

During the two days, we will make a film of your experience which we will show you at the end of Wednesday and then we will put it on our website to share with parents.  Of course we will also show it again just before you leave in Year 11!!!

So don't miss out on this opportunity to get the best start when joining Winston.

Football Success

Huge congratulations to 2019 Winston leaver Sam Evans who has signed his 1st senior contract with Woking FC. After a spell with Brighton FC Academy, Sam joined Woking FC Academy in Yr11 and has gone on to impress, making appearances for the Academy, U23's and 1st team in the season just gone.

Whilst at Winston Sam was a huge part of the PE Department, most notably for his contribution towards Sports Leadership, Athletics and the successful Football side ran by Mr Ludlow.

We hope to next see Sam making many more appearances at The Laithwaite Community Stadium and wish him all the best in the next chapter of his football journey and his final year of A Levels!

Still a Long Way to Go!

Next Steps!

Our new project is beginning to take shape.  Staff and students are delighted that the drilling has stopped!!

Drama During Lock-down!

Throughout the closure of schools, Drama students at The Winston Churchill School have come together in a wide scale extra-curricular community competition to re-create their favourite movie moments in a single freeze frame. Students and staff alike have spent their afternoons digitally editing or throwing together makeshift set and costumes in what became know as the Freeze Frame Challenge.

Each week, a winner was selected and displayed on the Drama home page. We were incredibly impressed with the skill and comedy behind so many of these submissions, from Forest Gump to Sharknado. Thanks to all of those who took part.

Twenty year 10 Drama students were invited to take part in a workshop and audition with London's prestigious National Youth Theatre (NYT).
The students were required to learn and perform a monologue for the visiting NYT representative after completing a challenging three hour workshop.
As a result of this, we are thrilled to say that three of our students were offered membership to the National Youth Theatre, which is an outstanding achievement and testament to the talent of young actors/ performers at Winston.
Year 7 and 8 Drama students were challenged to take part in a script writing assignment, consisting of at least five scenes and following a prescribed script writing format. We were overwhelmed with the number of entries that we received and will be publishing some of the very best entries on our Drama Portal on FROG over the next few weeks.
