Being the Best We Can Be

 Congratulations!

We are delighted to have five of our Winston students participate in creative writing competitions run by Young Writers throughout the course of 2023/24. Rosie Saunders wrote a scintillating entry for the competition called ‘The Spook Squad.’ Avanthika Gopolakrishnan, Leen Abuasaker and Oliver Bell submitted superb entries for the competition titled: ‘Glitch’. Maksym Kozyr’s story has made it through to the next stage of the BBC 500 words 2023 competition. This is a fantastic achievement in and of itself as students compete in this competition from all over the country!

Avanthika Gopolakrishnan has had her entry for a previous competition titled, ‘This is Me’ published in an anthology produced by Young Writers. The school is just as proud as Avanthika is of this wonderful achievement. Winston is excited to see more boys engage and take part in creative writing opportunities offered within the school. We celebrate each of these students’ efforts and achievements. We hope their success and enthusiasm for such opportunities will encourage more students to get involved and try something new in 2024.

A New Experience

 Year 10 Food Preparation

The Year 10 Food Preparation and Nutrition class had a very different experience today, thanks to Mrs Alexander who bought in three braces of pheasants. Miss Reynolds taught them to pluck, prepare and dress a pheasant whilst they learnt about locally sourced food, seasonality and the health benefits of pheasant meat. Some pupils were eager to get involved and with feathers flying the birds were plucked and prepared in no time.

Thank you Mrs Alexander. Year 10 are looking forward to trying the pheasant meat next lesson.

Learning into Practice

Year 7 Atomic Structure

To consolidate their understanding of atomic structure, Dr North and Miss Chin-Jones' Year 7 classes made atoms from a range of craft materials.  They were extremely creative and constructed three dimensional models of nuclei with orbiting electrons.

 The Manhattan Project

On Friday 12th of January, The Manhattan Project had their first gig of the year. They played at New Music Night in Reigate at Reigate Priory Football Club. New Music Night is a monthly night for local bands to come and play original songs to a live audience. The Manhattan Project were on first and they were the youngest band there! Despite this being very daunting for them, they performed amazingly!

We look forward to The Manhattan Project playing at our own Battle of the Bands later this year!

An Image of Yourself

 Year 8 Self-Portrait

In Art  Year 8 students have been learning about the Art movement German Expressionism. Students have completed their own research, experimented with materials and have analysed an artwork.  They are now drawing out a self-portrait in the style of German expressionism and are working on card to create a collagraph in preparation for printing in the forthcoming lessons.  Mrs Pinion is looking forward to seeing the final outcomes from this project.

Starting Out

 Cook Stars Business Studies Talk

Our Year 10 Business Studies students had a guest speaker come and explain what it is like to set up a business and be part of an existing franchise.  Lucy Davies from Cook Stars came to talk about her career change from Deputy Headteacher, to running her own business of cookery classes for children.  She explained to our students what support she had when getting started and all the different aspects of her new business and what she has to consider when planning her next step.  The students were able to see how the theory they have been learning in lessons applies to a real life business in our local area.

Learning New Skills

 Alternative Curriculum Autumn Term

Woking Foodbank

The Year 10 and 11 Core Skills group have worked hard over the last few weeks to organise and pack food hampers for the local food bank. The group put to practise their wrapping skills and help drop off the hampers themselves.

Guinness Court Mince Pies

The barista team worked extremely hard last week to bake a 100 mince pies. These were then distributed to the Guinness Court Trust behind the school by Jack and Charlie, from the Barista team and Mr Johnson.

GASP Motor Project

A group of year 10 and 11 students have spent this half term working on a mechanics course with the GASP team. The course has involved them working towards a AQA certificate in motor vehicles.

They concluded their course by attending Dunsford racetrack to race a go karts. The most exciting and exhilarating morning of racing.

Well done to all those who took part in the course.

Year 10 Climbing

As part of their Asdan Course the Year 10 Core Skills group have taken part in climbing course this term. They have been attending the Camberley Leisure Centre each week. They have all learnt new skills and have grown in confidence each week. Some of the students even got to the top of the highest tower.
