New Challenges

Year 9 Enigma

Year 9 Enigma were given the short brief, inspired by BBC Young Reporter, to 'prepare a journalistic report about something personal to you or your community, or the wider world'. Working collaboratively, they considered, planned, researched, wrote and produced their reports either in print, film or audio using the Radio Woking studio.

Reports have included a 'class news' broadcast featuring students' successes and opportunities; local news that student feel warrant more attention; and global news such as racial discrimination in China.

Students should be commended for their ability to work so successfully in their groups, their self determination to accomplish a goal and their attention to detail in a final piece of work.

Art Club

I visited Art Club one day after school and found the students engaged in making poppies out of different materials, ready to commemorate Armistice Day.  Some students were painting poppies on to thin plastic, which will then be suspended above our memorial garden and other were making them in card to be displayed inside.

The Winston Experience

Textiles Club

Textile Club takes place every Monday from 3-4pm in room 10. After half term we will be working on making Christmas presents and Christmas decorations for family members. The students are currently working hard to learn a variety of new techniques and are gaining confidence in using the sewing machines.

The club is mainly run by our prefects (Poppy Phillips, Natasha Fletcher and Viktoria Lantos) with the help of Miss King.

All year groups welcome!

Halloween Safety

Students are being reminded how to keep themselves safe if they are out and about for Halloween.

Assembly this Week

Mr Collins challenged students , this week, to consider who inspires them and why.  He talked through a number of possible candidates for the role and then particularly spoke about the inspiration that his mum has been throughout his life.  Mr Collins then developed these initial ideas by introducing Simon Fitzmaurice, an incredibly talented young man, who taught English and made films.  Simon was diagnosed with motor neuron disease and the assembly then focused on the impact this had on Simon's life and the resilience Simon demonstrated every day.  He wrote a book, 'My name is Emily,' by using his eyes on a computer screen  and then directed it as a film.  By finding ways to deal with the barriers before him, Simon became an inspiration for others.
Students were then challenged to consider their mind set when faced with challenges.

Languages Matter

European Day of Languages

Students at Winston recently took part in a number of activities to celebrate European Day of Languages 2019.
Language Leaders from across the year groups ran a very popular MFL pop-up café where they sold European-themed cupcakes, Belgian waffles and French crêpes.

Students also responded to the registers in different European languages throughout the day and learnt interesting facts and figures about the importance of learning languages. The European Photo booth activity also proved popular!

Over the last two weeks students have been taking part in a European-themed ‘Who wants to be a millionaire’ quiz during tutor times. Congratulations to the following winning tutor groups:
7AER and 7EWD, 8DFI, 9LAL, 11LRR

Miss Finney

Japanese Club

At Japanese Club this term students have been learning basic conversations and have been gaining an insight into Japanese culture, traditions, festivals and lifestyle through a varied programme of activities. Last week they learnt how to write in Katakana. Here, they are working out how to sound out and write their names in Katakana.

Sculpture Inspires Students

Winston Welcomes Paolozzi Hermes

I was delighted to accept the opportunity offered by Art UK to have a sculpture from the Ingram collection in school for a day.  Ms Shaw, Head of Art, selected a piece, that complemented the work being developed by our Year 10 GCSE students, Hermes.

'Hermes'

Our students had the opportunity to work under the guidance of Stuart Simler, an artist experienced in working with schools.

The students were encouraged to analyse the sculpture and how Paolozzi adapts the human form to his own style.  There were then a number of warm up drawing exercises, with the aim of improving observational drawing.  The opportunity to work with a professional artist, brought a fresh perspective to the work of our students and Stuart related to each of the groups that were given the chance to develop their skills.

Celebrating Hard Work and Commitment

On Thursday the Maths Department wanted to celebrate the hard work that so many students had been putting in to their work since the start of term.  Every teacher of a Year 11 class was asked to give the names of students who were already going above and beyond to ensure that they have fantastic results in their GCSE examination.  Fifty students had their names put forward and they were all invited to the Churchill Suite to have some cake and have their hard work recognised by the Maths Department.
