Your School; the Wow Factor

We are investing in Your Education

Room 14 is having a major make over.  The room has been completely gutted and significant work is taking place to create a high quality, original food technology teaching room.  As this room is finished the team will move into room 13, with the same design but with the added feature of a glass wall, allowing vision into the space.

As with all of our other site developments, the rooms will be equipped with great electrical equipment, including induction hobs and hide and slide ovens. The new windows have created a light open room with that professional finish.

Room 14 under construction.

Room 14 ceiling is being painted.

Store room and prep room for Food Technology

Room 9A, installation of new ceiling and floor, plus decoration.

The new meeting room is being completed.

Basketball at Winston

 Basketball Fever!

With one trip and two tournaments over the last 5 days, there was plenty of Basketball to be enjoyed.

On Sunday 19th May, 16 students made their way to the O2 ready to watch the Basketball Play-Off Finals. After collecting a free bottle of Prime at Waterloo station and navigating through the Underground, we arrived ready to watch the woman's final, which London Lions won 92-65 to secure their 4th title in a row. The men's final proved to be much closer, finishing 88-85 to London Lions, which created a great atmosphere in the stadium. This trip was offered as an award to our students who have dedicated their time training, playing, coaching and/or officiating for Winston. Their hard work and contribution to Winston Basketball has been greatly appreciated this year.

Following some inspiration at the O2, the Yr8 Boys then had a tournament the following day, organised by the charity 'Basketball 4 All', playing against schools from the Aldershot District. The team played some good Basketball, winning all of their games to finish top as overall winners. It was great to have some Surrey Scorchers representatives at the event too who were able to give our students some expert advice.

It was then the turn of Miss Retzepter and the Yr9 Girls to attend the same tournament a few days later. The girls had a great time and enjoyed playing new opposition. The team came 4th overall.

Matilda

 Matilda - A Sneak Peak

In May, students in the Drama department started work on a new unique challenge. They set out to put together a musical that could be supported by the students in a nearby primary school as part of a bigger collaboration project. As the idea took shape, they set out rehearsing and blocking one of the most popular modern musicals: Matilda.

The show itself presents a unique challenge for students at Key Stage 3 and 4. The melodies are complex and multi-layered, the dances are quick and complicated, the music runs fast, and the lighting design demands endless cue programming in the Performance Space. I cannot tell you how astonished I have been of the monumental efforts of our students. They have risen to the challenge and found their stride from the very first rehearsal. By making use of the exceptional technology in the Performance Space, students have been able to start as they mean to go on and run each number as though it was the final night.

Students have dedicated hours of rehearsal time to painstakingly arranging each song, dance and scene and we have included a sneak peak from an early rehearsal.

The performance itself will run for a single evening on Wednesday 26th June. Tickets will be available in June.

Directions in German

German lesson my year 8 class drew a map of their own town and named lots of sights/buildings. The task was to then create a tour guide "Stadtführer" to tell tourists of their town how to get to those different sights or destinations. The students enjoyed this creative task and needed to give directions in German using the correct grammar for one or two people or even the formal "Sie".

Representing the School

 English Schools Athletics

At the recent 1st Round of the English Schools Athletics, hosted at the Sports Box, Winston took over 50 students to compete and represent the school.

The teams consisted of boys and girls in the Junior (Year 7&8) and Inter (Year 9&10) categories. Each student had to compete in 1 x field event and 1 x track event. So, although a student may specialise in one event, they had to prepare to do their best in a second event too. Each competitor was able to pick up points for their team.....the quicker they ran, the further they threw or higher they jumped would mean more points. In attendance were both independent and state schools, which always makes it a challenging competition.

Final standings were not as good as we would've liked. Hopefully additional training and effort in the next few weeks will see better results at the District Finals on June 17th.

Junior Girls 10th (out of 11) - Strong performance from Kiera S (800m)
Inter Girls 9th (out of 10) - Strong performance from Florence H (800m) & Lucy W (1500m)
Inter Boys 8th (out of 12) - Strong performances from Jasper S (100m) & Ayaan A (200m)

Finally, the performances of the Junior Boys meant they finished 5th (out of 12). This means they qualify for the Regional Plate Final in Kingston on June 11th! There were some outstanding performances from Dapo O (100m), Finn N (100m & Shot), Reuben L (800m), Mathew H (High Jump), Ali H (Triple Jump), George P (Discus) and the whole Relay team. As a team they have shown what fantastic athletes they are since joining Winston and we hope they can perform just as well at the Regionals.

Next Chapter: No Rain!

Duke of Edinburgh Bronze Award

The final expedition followed the one where it poured with rain and had to be abandoned.  This time the weather was perfect, everyone stayed dry and thoroughly enjoyed the location in the sunshine.  From setting off from the station, in the right direction, to pitching their tents, correctly this time, and cooking a meal, the students demonstrated resilience, great communication and leadership skills.

Mr Harding and his team of staff commented on how well the students conducted themselves, across the weekend.  The staff were very proud of all of the students and their achievements.

In History this Week

 Crazy Caricatures!

This term 7WR historians are taking part in an enquiry into who they think was the best monarch of the Tudor period. This week they have been tasked with finding out more about Edward VI and his short reign as King. To show a deeper understanding of the reputation of this monarch, they have been tasked with creating a caricature of the King. They were asked to select information relevant to the enquiry and then had 20 minutes to show these pieces of historic detail through exaggerated features on a caricature portrait. Here is what they came up with:
Lili drew one of the King's advisors in the background - to highlight how he
never had full control and had to rule under the supervision of others.

Lexie decided to show Edward VI as a baby to highlight his young age.
He was given the crown when he was only 9 years old.

Harry decided to cover his version of Edward in spots  and with a thermometer to show how he was always sick. He also has shown the land England lost to both Scotland and France under Edwards reign as his money seems to be fading away.

In Jessica's interpretation, Edward VI is holding a bible which symbolises his introduction of
the Book of Common Prayer and shows his religious influence.

Year 8 University Visit

Classics Taster Day at University of Reading

Year 8 students enjoyed a day in the Classical World, counting like the Romans, writing like the Greeks and speaking like the Egyptians.

With a tour of the campus (and a buffet lunch) students got to experience the university, talking with student ambassadors about their studies and what university living entails.

The study of Classics makes one a more empathetic person, more effective communicator and more capable navigator of our world, so said the organiser. And we agree!

Winston looks forward to hosting our own Classics Taster Day again for Year 7 students later this summer.
