Developing Football for Girls

 A Special Day

On Friday 26th April, we hosted a film crew, with the aim of demonstrating the progress we have made with Girls' Football.  Following on from the #Lets Play initiative, our Year 8 team had the opportunity to show what they can do and were also interviewed.  Mr Phillips and Mr Inwards, along with Ms De Busen have been coaching the team for two seasons and  the numbers joining have significantly increased.

The girls were also able to use their new kit, chosen by Ms De Busen.  The team were able to explain what the sport has done for their footballing skills and for their confidence. They were incredibly articulate off the field, as they were proficient on the pitch.  Their passion to play football was evident.

Below are some of the images from the morning.
There is a second episode to this story, which will be on the blog in a few weeks time.

Playing with Integrity

 Great Experience

On Friday 26th April, 9 members of the Year 7 netball team represented Woking in the Surrey Netball Finals. The girls exhibited all of our Winston skills throughout the tournament and were commended by the umpires for their ability to listen to feedback and collaborate successfully as a team. Molly, Kayla, Beatrice, Eva, Lorna and Jessica provided strong centre court play while Lily scored some brilliant goals and Sunny and Iman created a strong defence that made it challenging for others to get passed.

We left without a medal however not empty-handed. For the second-time in a row, one of our players, Iman, was awarded 'Player of the tournament' for her superb defensive skills. Well done Iman and to the whole team. Bring on the Year 8 season, we'll be ready!

We Were There

 Five Finals; Well Done Winston!

"On Monday 22nd and Tuesday 23rd April, the schools Football District Finals took place at Woking FC. The event sees the best 2 teams from the district battle it out to be crowned district champions. This year saw Winston reach a remarkable five finals out of a possible eight. This is a great effort as last year we only had two teams involved.

The Year 11 boys were up against a good Salesian side who were the current holders of the competition. They managed to create some good opportunities but unfortunately went 2-0 down. They managed to respond with a great goal from Moby. This left them 2-1 down with five minutes to go so they really pushed forward to try and get the equaliser. Unfortunately, they got caught on two counter attacks and lost the game 4-1. It was a great ending to the boys' time here at Winston.

Next up was the Year 9 boys which meant Mr Martin had managed 2/2 teams to the final. However his team were fairly beaten by a very good and organised Salesian school. The boys were beaten 4-1 but goal of the day was achieved by Aiden Watson in this match with a goal from 25-30 yards.

The third of the Winston teams to compete in the finals was our Year 7 boys team.

THEY ARE DISTRICT FOOTBALL CHAMPIONS!!!!

A massive congratulations to the Year 7 Boys who managed to win 2-1.

They have demonstrated fantastic discipline and levels of skill this year so a win is a justified result. A special mention to Max who caused the opposing team a constant headache with numerous dangerous runs. Hopefully this is the first of many for this talented team and Mr Fuller as team manager!

Tuesday saw the remaining two Winston teams go for Gold at the Kingfield Stadium. The Year 8 boys were up first and faced a Woking high team who they had drawn with 3-3 earlier on in the season. The team had gone unbeaten throughout the district league so the boys were confident going into the final. However, sport often throws up many twists and turns, and this final was no different. We found ourselves 2-0 down after two quick breaks from the opposition. The second half was a much better performance from the boys but still ended up on the wrong side of a 3-1 scoreline.

The final match of the day was between our Year8/9 Girls and Woking High. Mr Phillips and Mr Inwards have put in a tremendous amount of work with these girls and they have been extremely committed to training throughout the year. The match was a nailbiter and saw some big chances at both ends being squandered. Woking High had a very good attacking player but she was nullified by Winstons' fantastic defensive line. The match ended 0-0 which meant one thing.....penalties. The shoot out took place in front of the main stand at Woking and went all the way to sudden death. Unfortunately, Winston just missed out and collected second place but it's important to note, that most the girls were competing with the year group up. So next year, we have really high hopes for the girls!!

Finally, the tournament was run by Winston and we took 5 Year 9's to help organise the day. The boys who helped out were a credit to the school and announced teams/results through the PA system, whilst the others collected money on the front desk from spectators. Seb, Will, Jorge, Morgan, Lucas and Harry were fantastic and should be extremely proud.

We also took some Year 7's to be ball boys and they flourished in the opportunity and had smiles on their faces all day!

All in all, Winston did fantastically this year and the PE Department would like to thank all the players for their commitment and efforts this year.

PL Inspires

PL Inspires

Our students are at an event at Wembley Stadium today, presenting their work entitled Pride in Your Periods'.  Charlotte, Emma and Ellie have developed an outstanding project that enables girls to build their confidence during their periods and provides advice and support.  It also enables boys to understand the challenges for girls.

The girls are representing Chelsea Football Club and they are in competition with 47 other football clubs.

We wish them every success.

Click on the link below to find the whole article published by Chelsea. They are very proud of the students and so are we.

National Tchoukball Finals

 Winston Plays Tchoukball

On Friday 19th April, 6 of our Yr10's travelled to Aylesbury to take part in the National Tchoukball Finals, along with 6 other schools.

Tchoukball is a fast paced mixed gender, non-contact game, that requires teams to shoot a ball at a rebound net so that it bounces outside of the 'D' in order to score a point, whilst the defending team tries to prevent the ball from touching the ground by catching it.

The team started the finals slowly but gradually grew in confidence throughout the day. After all the group games had been played, Winston had qualified for the 3rd/4th play off. The top 2 teams contained international youth players so Winston were not expected to finish in the top 2.

The last fixture was against Ash Manor. Both teams started well, with the 1st half finishing 8-8. In the 2nd half the team dropped off which meant Ash Manor increased their lead to win and take 3rd place. However, the team can be proud of their 4th place finish and their performances. Tchoukball is not a sport the students regularly play so it was impressive to see the team compete and apply their skills so well against the best in the country. There were some great individual moments of power, finesse, defending and commitment.

Tchoukball will be seen again and offered to KS3 students as a part of National School Sports Week. We would love to take an U14 squad next year along with our U16's.

This Week

Year 10 Surrey Netball Finals

Today our Year 10 netball team represented Woking in the Surrey Netball Finals at the Surrey Sports Park. While we didn't place where we wanted to, spirits remained high and lots of lessons were learnt. We are very proud of Niamh, who deservedly received recognition as 'Player of the Tournament' and was very happy to collect a signed Surrey Storm T-shirt as a reward. Well done to the girls on their success this season and good luck to Year 7 who have their chance in the Surrey Finals next Thursday!

Great Food, Excellent Value

Our food service at Winston has always been exceptional.  It is good quality, tasty food.  The team have decided to take this a step further, and have worked on recipes that reduce the carbon footprint of the meals. They explain in the information below the aims of the project but our staff and children know that the Beef and Bean Chilli with wedges was delicious!

Watch this Space: next week we have the football district finals, and a film crew in school promoting girls playing football, as well as the outcome of the National Tchoukball Finals and Year 7 in the Surrey netball finals.
