Winston Plays Tchoukball
On Friday 19th April, 6 of our Yr10's travelled to Aylesbury to take part in the National Tchoukball Finals, along with 6 other schools.
Tchoukball is a fast paced mixed gender, non-contact game, that requires teams to shoot a ball at a rebound net so that it bounces outside of the 'D' in order to score a point, whilst the defending team tries to prevent the ball from touching the ground by catching it.
The team started the finals slowly but gradually grew in confidence throughout the day. After all the group games had been played, Winston had qualified for the 3rd/4th play off. The top 2 teams contained international youth players so Winston were not expected to finish in the top 2.
The last fixture was against Ash Manor. Both teams started well, with the 1st half finishing 8-8. In the 2nd half the team dropped off which meant Ash Manor increased their lead to win and take 3rd place. However, the team can be proud of their 4th place finish and their performances. Tchoukball is not a sport the students regularly play so it was impressive to see the team compete and apply their skills so well against the best in the country. There were some great individual moments of power, finesse, defending and commitment.
Tchoukball will be seen again and offered to KS3 students as a part of National School Sports Week. We would love to take an U14 squad next year along with our U16's.
