Chelsea Spring Term
The Spring term was super busy for all those who are part of
our weekly Chelsea F.C. provision. We are lucky to have coach Issac every
Thursday working with variety of groups on different topics including digital
literacy, personal development, reading skills and the Premier League Inspire Programme.
The provision works with over 60 students across the two-week timetable.
Firstly, a group of Year 7 and 8 students have been part of
the reading skills group that have been working hard with Issac throughout the
term. They have been working on their
literacy and reading skills and have been in the process of planning, designing
and writing some interview questions for one of the Cheslea academy players.
They then went on a trip to Cobham the Chelsea training ground to take part in a workshop day around their reading skills and to interview some of the academy
players. They were super nervous and for some of them it was the first time
they had read their work out loud, but they did amazingly well! I think we have some
future sport journalist in our school. Well Done to the reading skills group.
Next a group of girls from year 9 and 10 were part of
Chelseas International Women’s Day. They
firstly went to the Chelsea training
ground to take part in some training by the Chelsea coaches on how to deliver and
a lead session to primary school students at the event the following week. Then on the 8th March the girls
travelled to Kingsmeadow Stadium to help deliver an event to primary school
females. They lead sessions, shared their own personal experiences and helped inspire the next generation on International Women’s Day. Our students all received tickets to the
upcoming Chelsea ladies’ game against Arsenal, as a reward and we received so
much positive feedback from the Chelsea coaches after the event. Well, done
Ladies!
On the last day before half term two students from year 10 (Charlotte and Ellie) were invited by the Premier League to a girl’s empowerment day at The National Football Museum in Manchester.
The girls were chosen as they had participated
in the Chelsea session Changemakers which looks to inspire and empower young
girls. The girls had to get up extremely early to make sure they made their
train to Manchester. When they arrived, the girls listened to speech by ex WSL
goalkeeper Chloe Morgan. Throughout the day the girls took part in a variety of
workshops that were based around inspiring the next generation. The girls took part in a drama production, a
museum tour and even made some of there own artwork which will be displayed in
the Chelsea classroom at school. Our girls also signed one of Chloe Morgans old
football jerseys which will go into the football museum to be displayed for all
visitors to see. It was an extremely
long day but also inspiring for the girls and an experience they will never
forget. They both behaved brilliantly
and were amazing ambassadors for Winston.
Premier League Inspires Competition
That moves us on to the Premier League Inspires competition that the students have been working on since September. In small groups the students had to plan, design and present an idea around this year’s theme which was mental health.
Firstly, we had our school final where more than 15 groups of students from all year groups competed against each other. They presented their ideas to a panel of judges from school who had the tough decision of picking a school winner. Their ideas ranged from male groups aiming to support each other, football matches to raise funds for mental health charities, fidget toys for student’s dependant on their moods and support boxes that would be placed around school to support students. All the ideas had been so well thought out and were truly ingenious.
All of the ideas which were presented would
also support the growing issue of mental
health needs, within the school setting, for teenagers. The judges eventually picked two winners as
the competition was so fierce. One to
represent Winston for Chelsea into the next round and one to be Winston winners
who would start working on their project immediately with the help of Issac.
The Winston winners were Jasper and Lenny. Their idea evolved
around a men’s club that would support male students after school each week and
encourage them to talk. Their presentation was so professional and fantastically
informative and there plan so well thought out. We wish the boys luck with
their project.
The Chelsea winners and the group through to the next round were Charlotte, Emma and Ellie. There idea involved working with students in the school to feel more confident and encouraging them to be able to speak out about the impact females face when on their periods and how it affects their mental health. The girls got to work polishing their presentation for the Chelsea final at Stamford bridge in front of a new set of judges from the mental health industry. The girls were naturally nervous but went and smashed their presentation. They openly spoke about their own personal experiences and convinced the judges with their passion and desire to make change in terms of female’s mental health at Winston.
They won the Chelsea competition and would go
on to represent Chelsea against 45 other football clubs across the country.
Once it was confirmed they had won the real hard work started. They had to put their project into to action and whilst doing that they had to film and edit their own video ready for the final of the Premier League Inspires competition on 25th April at Wembley Stadium. The girls set up their first yoga and information session for students, they presented their idea to the Senior Leadership Team, held a Year 7 assembly, recorded their first podcast and they even presented their idea to a Chelsea academy player who came to the school to meet with them. They had created their own slogan “pride in your period” which was spreading across the school. They had immediately felt the impact of their hard work with lots of female students coming to them for advice and support with their periods.
Once the team had all their content for their video, they were invited by Chelsea to Stamford Bridge again to work with Chelsea TV to produce their film for the final. Again, the girls impressed with their maturity, vision for the film and openness to share their personal stories to make sure their message was spread further. The girls spent all day working on the video and learnt some important skills with editing too. The girls have produced an amazing video that they will take to the final next month.
Once the girls have been to the final, we look forwarded to sharing the video with you all.
Good luck girls and please keep inspiring and helping females to feel safe,
confident and able to speak about their mental health at Winston!
