Instrumental Stars

 Young Musician of the Year

On 27th June, in Performance Space, twenty of our finest musicians competed to be crowned Winston Young Musician of the Year.

These talented students have also worked hard for up to five years to be able to enter this competition.  It has required significant dedication and resilience and we have been fortunate to enjoy the outcome at the event. Students selected pieces requiring considerable technical skill and then delivered with confidence, so that every member of the audience was left in awe of their ability.

The judges were Ms Shlackman, Mr Parsons and Emily Dowsett a former student. They had an incredibly difficult task to determine the 1st and 2nd places,  The prize includes a voucher and the opportunity to perform again at our Christmas Concert on Tuesday 17th December.

We are Revolting!!

 Pirbright Village Primary and Winston

Our two schools formed a great partnership working on a production of Matilda.  Almost a 'play in a day', children from both schools created an electric performance, enjoyed by the audiences at both shows.

Mr Harrinton-Tucker wrote:

In June, the students of The Winston Churchill School and Pirbright Village Primary decided to join forces and perform a rendition of Matilda Jnr. This was a unique project that was produced and rehearsed together over two school days. The talented cast, of students from all year groups, have worked enthusiastically together over the last five weeks to develop the scenes from this immensely popular musical.

The process started with a pre-teach exhibition to Pirbright which saw members of Drama's Student Leadership team visit the primary school to go over several numbers in the Performance. The students from Pirbright immediately asserted themselves as excellent performers, singing at full volume, having already learnt the lyrics to every song. Choreography was shared across the day. The team and I were immediately blown away by how strong the talent was at Pirbright. The younger students were utterly brilliant, and approached each challenge with an outstanding professional attitude.

Following this, it was Pirbright's turn to come to us. Arriving at the Performance Space at Winston where the songs and scenes could come together. Both the cast and staff involved from each school are extremely proud and excited to have finally presented their hard work and I consider myself lucky to have worked with so many talented individuals. The students at Winston and Pirbright have managed every aspect of this performance. I am sincerely in awe of what they achieved in such a short space of time.

Art and Charity

 Art Exhibition

A private viewing of the work of our GCSE students took place on Thursday 20th June.  The exhibition was arranged in Performance Space, attracting a large number of visitors, staff, parents and students.

The work was inspirational but unfortunately cannot be photographed as it is current GCSE examination pieces.  However, staff were given the opportunity to bid for selected pieces of work that will be displayed around the school for the coming year.  Money raised will be split between the Woking Hospice and the Art Department.

There were also art pieces on display, created by students in Years 7, 8 and 9, and these images can be seen below.

Our Hospitality and Catering students served delicious canapes, whilst Mr Major ensured that the lighting and screen added to the atmosphere of the event.

A huge thank you to Ms Prangley, for the inspiration for the event and for transforming our Art Department and to Ms Sandling and Mrs Sims.

The Food Showdown!

Let's Cook

"On Monday 24th, Winston became it's very own 'Ready, Steady, Cook' studio. We welcomed The original school food showdown to our school, where our Year 7 students had the opportunity to listen to chef's discuss the importance of certain foods and the purpose of eating particular food groups. The students were able to interact throughout the talk with lots of fun and engaging conversations between them and the chefs.

The session ended with 2 students pairing up with a member of staff and competing against one another (the red vs green team). Each team had a different dish to make with only 15 minutes on the clock! Mr Jones went up against Miss De Bunsen in the first competition and Andrew and Robyn helped Mr Jones get the win after they cooked a lovely Sweet and Sour Chicken dish.

The second session saw Miss Harris go up against Mr Hollinshead and Mr Hollinshead claimed the victory with the help of Max and Sofia . This time it was a vegan dish that got the win.
The students had a great time taking part in this event which was put on by the catering provider now called Academy, so we would like to say a massive thank you for their support!"
