Great to See You

 Open Evening

I was delighted to welcome so many parents to our Open Evening on Thursday 29th September. Our students and staff were keen to show parents our school and the work that we do in each area.

Our Year 6 visitors were also the first people to experience our new facility, Performance Space.  Although there is still a small amount of work to complete, the contractor enabled us to be able to use it for the evening event.

Parents and their children were so impressed and the words 'warm, welcoming, impressive, exciting, clean, amazing, professional, inspiring' were being used by parents as they left.  The parents also recognised the level of investment that we have put into our school, creating modern, exciting learning spaces.

Thank you to our whole staff team and to all of our students for helping to create a great evening and for helping Year 6 to make to make the decision about their next school.

Not to be Missed

 Little Shop of Horrors

Students experienced an exciting start to their school production this year with the news that they would be returning to the Rhoda McGaw theatre in January. Winston is returning to the stage with Little Shop of Horrors, one of the most well known musicals of all time.
On Friday, the entire cast and crew met to look at the rehearsals ahead and quickly learnt that they were the largest production team in Winston History! Student leadership got the opportunity to introduce themselves and their roles before answering any questions new students had about the process. Each year, the responsibilities of students within the productions expands with opportunities including directing, choreography, photography, marketing, concept art and set design.

The students left will a real buzz and determination to strive toward a fantastic show!

Science in Action

Year 9 Demonstration

9WT witnessed a dramatic chemical reaction during their science lesson on Tuesday. Mr Martin demonstrated the formation of a compound by making a salt (sodium chloride) from a metal (sodium) and a gas (chlorine) during his elements and compounds topic.

Year 10 in the Lab

The photo shows Mr French with his Year 10 students, who were testing for gases produced when acids react . They used several different, unique tests to detect gases hydrogen and carbon dioxide. The students learnt that the result of the tests would determine which gas was present, for example, a squeaky pop sound indicated hydrogen to be the final product.

In Dr North's year 10 classes (pictured 10WY) , they have been investigating density with regular and irregular objects. The students got to grips with a variety of equipment , which included using a vernier calliper. "

Year 7 in Action

 Year 7 Well-being Walk

Mrs Lewis organised a Year 7 well-being walk and quiz last week.
The quiz:
  1. Name 3 different trees you can see
  2. How many bins can you see?
  3. How many people can fit in the Astro?
  4. Find a four-leave clover
  5. How many kg of sand is in the long jump pit?
  6. How many steps will it take from the gate to the field to the main office (estimate)?
The Year 7 enjoyed the activity this morning, being out on the field; plenty of fresh air and exercise, before lessons started.

Year 7 Physical Education

Year 7 sports hall athletics in action! Standing long jump, vertical Jump, indoor javelin and shot along with speed and bounce. Students are collaborating with others to measure and record the results. I have been so impressed with their mind set.  They are showing a great willingness and ability to risk take and try something new.

Learning New Skills

 Year 10 PE Lessons

Year 10 alternative PE Lessons gives us all a focus on really establishing the values of physical education and physical activity. Year 10 are focusing on officiating through the sport of Netball. The mixed gender classes have also given some of the students a great leadership opportunity, as most of the boys had not played netball before, but quickly picked up the rules and are now able to umpire, with some support.  It has also developed awareness for the social benefits of sports as the girls play alongside the boys, smiling and laughing while being physically active.

Learning New Skills

We are very proud of the work completed by some of our students in our Coffee Shop.  Staff go over during the day to enjoy a range of types of coffee and freshly baked cakes.  This is a picture I took last week of the cappuccino Tyler Rogers made me. He has been practising his barista skills! I was really impressed, and he was really pleased with his efforts.
