Our Winston Community

Well Done Winston!

We are delighted to announce that we are now an 'All Together Gold School', having been awarded with the gold certificate from the Anti-Bullying Alliance. This means that we have demonstrated the highest commitment to stopping bullying and improving the well being of our students. Incredibly proud!

Keeping Fit the Winston Way

Mr Martin and Mrs Walton have encouraged the PE Department to create a workout video
just for you!  You must log into Frog to view.

Making Music Together!

Mr Drake, Ms Laurent and Miss Shlackman took part in a recording of Stevie Wonder's Superstition during the Easter break!
It was organised by a Facebook group for music teachers across the UK of which we are members.
We all recorded audio and video separately to a click track and then all the parts were put together.
It's great to see so many music teachers playing alongside each other in this Lockdown!

To Year 11 from Mr Collins

An ode (of sorts) to Year 11.

Nearly four weeks ago, just an hour away from seeing a performance of “The Seagull” in London with ten Year 11s, the performance was cancelled. Disappointing as it was (the Theatre had given us ten free tickets to use as a rewards trip), disappointment wasn’t the emotion that spread around that large Prezzo’s table.

A strange mix of humour, fear and adventure was what we saw: “Oh well, we can have dessert after all”; “can we go to M&M world?”; “closing the theatres is the start isn’t it?”.

It was the start. Schools closed. Exams cancelled. Movement restricted. Lives and work now organised around Zoom and Teams. Instagram quizzes, 5 o’clock briefings, FaceTime dinner dates. Daily walks/runs where you daren’t stop for fear of being “that guy” who is doing the wrong thing. Parents home schooling, students home working, teachers home marking! And for some - far too many - this “new normal” is operating in the backdrop of family members who are unwell, some seriously.

It’s hard. But time and time again my thoughts over the past few weeks have been coming back to Year 11. I didn’t get to say goodbye to my two classes properly. On the final Wednesday before schools closed I developed a cough and couldn’t come back. A fleeting phone call to both classes the next day was all I got.

So this is a bit of an ode to all Year 11, many of whom will be feeling a little lost right now. What have you been working towards? How can you prove your worth if there are no exams to show off your hard work? How will you prove yourself in years to come against others who did their exams the “right way”?

The truth is, and always has been, that you are more than the sum of your parts.

Nowhere in the two iterations of the Winston Way that I have seen since being at the school have I seen “prepare students and spoon feed them education until they can pass an exam”. Education for you guys has always been more than that.

From English alone you will take invaluable skills into your future that no exam result could alter. The ability to communicate effectively both verbally and on paper. An analytical and critical mind that can accept and battle through any challenge put to you. An evaluative mindset that challenges things, rather than accepts outright what has been put to you. Resilience, independence, collaboration.

You are more than the sum of your parts. You are more than the sum of your exams.

You will have the chance to prove yourself in that exam setting. Post-16 education and training will come and you will prove yourself in all the ways you can and want to. For now, embrace what is happening. Read some books. Spend time with family. Catch up on some Netflix series. Learn a new skill. Bake. Cook. Spend some time learning new things about yourself. The pace of life will come back to normal.

There will be exams. There will be Proms, even if they’re your A Level ones. There will be results days. For now, We want you to know that we are proud. Proud of the people you have become over the past two years. Proud of your resilience and fortitude. Proud of your humour. Proud of you.

Every Friday morning during Form I’d see almost 10% of the year group for intervention. Many more of you were going to other English sessions. Many many more of you went to intervention sessions for all the other subjects around the school. Just because exams are cancelled does not mean this was wasted time. Skills were developed, critical thinking was enhanced. Your dedication to your studies and to yourselves was clear.

You will get your results. You will have earned your results.

You are still more than the sum of your parts.

Regards,

Mr G Collins

Painting Stones

Some students have been in school this week to help to support their parents in Key Worker roles.  Mr Johnson organised this activity, with the aim of the stones being placed in the community.

Duke of Edinburgh Award Skills

Ms Pflanz, Miss Hazelwood and Mr Fisher worked with a small group of students as they learnt some of the skills that they will need when they start to work towards their Duke of Edinburgh Award.  The students also took part in a Treasure Hunt and played football!

Catching Up

Gremlin Dance Challenge

On the 12th March The Winston Churchill KS3 & KS4 Dance Teams represented the school at the Gremlin Dance Challenge held at The Princess Hall Theatre, Aldershot.
Competing against 24 schools our girls performed extremely well and all of the hard work they had put into preparing for the show certainly paid off.

Our KS3 Team Pride of Lions were awarded Best Soundtrack and commended for their choreography.

The KS4 Team Flames to Ashes won Overall Best Performance of their category which is an outstanding achievement.

Thank you to Mrs Lyddon and Mr Asprey for supporting the students to develop their entry and to Mr Harrington-Tucker who enabled the students to attend the competition.

Ironheart

Do you remember 'Courage Calls', a play written and directed by some amazing Year 7 students about the Suffragette movement?  This extremely talented group have been devising a new production looking at the role of women during the second world war.  However:

The student directed production of Ironheart has gone remote! Following the news of school closures the directors of Ironheart have started working on Frog and One Drive to continue planning their show. Evie, Emily, Jess and Emma have set up shared documents online to plan everything from concept scenes to props, choreography and set so that rehearsals can still continue when the school re-opens.

We are all excited to see the outcome of their dedication, creativity and hard work
in the Autumn Term!

Amazing Pieces of Art

Thank you to Joely, Amy and Maisie for sharing their work with us.

RE Challenge

Tegan's RE work. The question she chose was “are we destroying Gods earth?”  She says “my picture represents how the human race are destroying God’s planet.  I show this by creating a hot air balloon Where the ballon is the earth and the basket is full of our human race.  Next the basket are some of the things that are causing our destruction to our planet earth, that’s why it is shown to be melting.  At the top are some of the different gods eg Buddha and God telling us to STOP.  If we carry on like this, the hot air balloon will pop and we will all die”

Geography Research

Emily in Year 7 enjoyed researching the Chinese province of Tibet.
