Keeping Safe

 Water Safety 💧

I have been asked to share the following information with you.  Assemblies this week have been on the theme of personal safety, including water, heat and fires raising awareness for all of our students.

URGENT: A significant number of our students are jumping into Goldsworth Park Lake.  This is dangerous and the students are ignoring warnings and the risks to life.  They have been seen by a member of Winton’s staff and we are all concerned, as there is no supervision or adult presence, should a child get into difficulties. The county council advice to the public is in line with UK Health Security Agency and Public Health advice, and those messages have been shared over the previous seven days, and will continue to be shared.

We are also promoting water safety advice and warning people not to have BBQs in outdoor spaces such as our commons via Surrey Fire & Rescue Service, your assistance in reinforcing those messages via your usual communication channels will be much appreciated.

·         It can be tempting to cool off in open water when the weather is hot, but this can be unsafe and increase the risk of gastrointestinal illnesses or stomach bugs. Keep you and your family safe with water safety advice: Water Safety Advice | Royal Life Saving Society UK ( RLSS UK )

Swimming in reservoirs is dangerous. These are operational sites and even the strongest swimmers can get into serious difficulties. There is a leaflet about open water swimming (swimming in lakes, rivers and reservoirs) https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/swim-healthy-leaflet

Drama is back...

 Back to the 80's

Acting, singing and dancing students from across Years 7, 8, 9, 10 and 11 have been performing the high-energy musical 'Back to the 80's' in our Main School hall this week.

Brilliantly supported on stage by our highly talented Pit Band, inspired by the professional musicianship of Chris Drake and Claire Laurent from the school Music department, as well as our Tech crew, led by Erin Harrison, our Senior Lighting Engineer and Will Jones and a backstage support team organised by Oliver Bostock, the cast told the story, via a generous sprinkling of the greatest musical hits of the 80's, of the senior class of William Ocean High School, as remembered through the eyes of now 30-something Corey Palmer ( Dewi Gallagher Sanchez ).

17-year-old Corey ( played by Hamish Skeoch ) is madly in love with his next-door neighbour Tiffany Houston, ( Emma Harrison ) and her best friends Cindy, Mel and Kim ( played by Hannah McIntyre, Tilly Tuthill and Bo Kent ), one of the coolest girls in the school. However, she is too busy mooning over Michael Feldman ( Luke Compton ), the hottest guy around. Michael and his friends ( Danish Hussain, Wil Hughes and Tyrone Davids ) are athletic and good-looking - the kind of guys that Corey and his two best friends, Alf ( Archie Smith ) and Kirk ( Lucas Everitt ) can only dream of being.

Yet they're still one up on Phoebe McFerrin III, ( Katie Gershikov ), whose best friend is her computer and who believes the crazy notion that one day CD's will replace cassette tapes, even though her real friends Laura and Debbie ( played by Rowan Eltayeb and Amy Crawford ) do their best to persuade Phoebe not to run for Student President.

Throw into this mix a love affair between two teachers at the school, ( played by Nyah Conway and Dom Stacey ), as well a huge range of high energy dance routines ( choreographed by Louisa Chaffey ).

Sports Day

 Great Participation

'Sports Day 2022 - our most successful yet!'  Over the two days, approximately 850 students competed in the KS4 and KS3 athletics events.  The PE department were thrilled to see such high numbers of students wanting to get involved, step out of their comfort zone and challenge themselves in a range of different events.  The students showed sheer determination to succeed and for a lot of them it was their first time at experiencing the nerves of competition and being graceful in success and defeat.  The students were so supportive of one another, cheering each other on throughout the day showing great sportsmanship.   We saw some outstanding performances from a number of students but a special mention goes to Ben Linekar (Y9) who broke the 300m record clocking a time of 43.32sec beating the record set in 2014.
Our performers of the day were:
Y7 Boy: Logan Formby (Gold 100m, Gold 200m)
Y7 Girl: Florence Holmes (Gold 800m, Gold 200m, Gold Shot Put)
Y8 Boy: Max Dawson (Gold Discus, Gold Shot Put, Gold Javelin)
Y8 Girl: Jenny Hall (Gold 800m, Gold 300m, Gold Javelin)
Y9 Boy: Ben Linekar (Gold 800m, New record breaker for 300m)
Y9 Girl: Isobel Wathen (Gold 100m, Gold Long Jump)
Our Year 10 Heptathlon results were as follows:
Boys:
Alfie Slate - 3rd (1320 points)
Matt Hallums - 2nd (1464 points)
Latham Roberts - 1st (1539 points)
Girls:
Grace Timblick - 3rd (1227 points)
Isabelle Heney - 2nd (1236 points)
Charlotte Gallagher - 1st (1406 points)
Students were in teams for Sports Day and their performances contributed to accumulating points for their team.  The overall team winners on the day were the BLUE team with 602 points!  Well done if you were representing the blue team!!!
A special thank you to Mr Reed for presenting the students with their winning medals and trophies.  We are sad to see Mr Reed leave us this summer and hope he enjoys a well-deserved retirement.  Thank you for inspiring and supporting so many Winston students over the years. We will miss you Mr Reed.
Well done to everyone who participated in Sports day this year, we hope to see you all, and more next summer!

Year 10 being Brilliant

 The Brilliant Club

Eleven students took part in the Brilliant Club this year. The Brilliant Club pairs University lecturers with students in secondary school, a partnership in which our young people work alongside the lecturer to produce a university style assignment. The students took part in seminars and produced their first ever 2000-word essay about E. M. Forster and the Edwardian period.

The feedback from the essays was very positive and all students received a 2:1 grade with three securing the highest award of a 1st.  This culminated in a visit to the Royal Holloway University in Egham, where students toured the campus and learnt more about what university life is like.  One of our Year 10 students, Alan, gave a speech to the eleven other schools on the experience and shared an extract of his assignment.

The students put a lot of effort into the project, and all the feedback from the students has been about the positive impact the experience has had on them.

Year 10 Business Studies

'Year 10 Business Studies students had the opportunity to take part in a web chat with Stef Sahmel who is responsible for sustainability at Abel and Cole. She discussed the importance of sustainability in business and the impact on the planet and future generations as well as the strategies Abel and Cole use to operate sustainably.  Stef presented to the group and then students had the chance to ask questions. Students had plenty of interesting important questions and chatting with Staf has enabled them to further understand how what they learn in lessons is implemented in real business situations.'
