Enriching the Winston Experience
Cosima and Susann, the German Students from Leipzig, visit Mr Hough's lessons and helped out on Science Enterprise Days. Mr Hough invited
them to teach a science lesson to 8WG but all in German. They chose the topic
of climate change as it is very topical and it is also covered in the German
syllabus soon. Cosima and Susann spent some time planning the
practicals with Mr Hough, although it needs to be noted that they came up with the practicals
and the whole lesson plan!
They both took to the lesson with fantastic enthusiasm, opening with Leonardo Dicaprio and his Oscar speech, stating that global warming is real and they asked the students what they were going to do help Leonardo increase his understanding of global warming through the practicals.
Susann and Cosima spoke entirely in German and prepared a
vocab sheet to help the students during the lesson if needed but they also had
an excellent power point that explained the tasks well. They asked the students
to show icecaps melting in the North and South Pole and how as the North Pole
is mainly ice it has little impact on rising sea levels but ice melting into
the sea from the South Pole does.
These can be seen in the photographs below (the ones with the foil trays).
They then demonstrated (still all in German) salt water
mixing and asked the students to show how fresh water and salt water would not
mix and its effect in the Gulf Stream. They students really enjoyed this and
understood it well. We had a student state that the cooling/slowing of the Gulf
Stream should not be a problem because ‘global warming’ will heat us up again.
Susann answered this questions very well, discussing the problems that this
will happen over time and Cosima explained that Germany have been experiencing
years of very hot Summers and very Cold Winters with little of Autumn and
Spring in between.
Cosima and Susann were excellent and a credit to themselves and their training. They were enthusiastic and planned very well. Mark and Natalie, 8WG were outstanding and I was very proud of them. They showed their true problem solving abilities and behaved very well for our guests.
Clare and Caroline, our Science Technicians, thank you for the practical equipment and short notice.
Assembly
Mr Chandler and Mr Stockman challenged the students this week on their use of grammar. This is an area of our work which now has significant recognition through the examination system and the marking of papers in all subjects.
Young Enterprise: Outbox
Winston's inaugural Young Enterprise company, Outbox, formed
by fifteen Year 10 Board Members, competed against five other companies at the Surrey
West Aera Company Competition, hosted by Something Big marketing agency in
Woking. Students were commended by the judges for the progress they have made
as a company, despite only having operated for half the time of their
competition, all of whom were sixth form students. While they didn't take home
a prize this time, students should be extremely proud of the way in which they
sold their company through the submission of a report, designing of a display
and delivery of a presentation.
