Introducing Mr French
Welcome to Mr French, joining Winston, as Deputy Head, from 11th April. He has a wide ranging role but at the heart is the focus of engaging with parents and the local community. Mr French has held a number of senior roles in Surrey schools and brings with him a wealth of experience. Having spent the day at Winston on Monday meeting both staff and students, Mr French was impressed with the warm welcome he received and the quality of lessons he observed, where students were engaged in their learning and supportive of each other.Governors at Work
A Full Governing Body meeting took place on Wednesday this week, in a chilly Churchill Suite! The agenda was wide ranging but inevitably also focussed on the latest government announcements.Visiting Consultant
It was great to see Angela Bradshaw in school for two days to review the progress we are making with developing teaching and learning so that it is good and outstanding across the school. She has also been listening to students and gaining an overview of the spiritual, moral, social and cultural aspects of the Winston experience.Year 8 at The Globe
To celebrate 400 years of Shakespeare, Mrs Parsons arranged for Year 8 students
to travel to The Globe Theatre in London to experience a day dedicated to 'the
Bard.'
Accompanied by Miss Nettleton, in the morning, students enjoyed a tour of The Globe
where they learned about the theatre's history and, ultimately, about
Shakespeare's impact on 400 years of English Heritage. They enjoyed a lunch in
the stunning facilities and then explored the Globe's exhibition and museum.
In the afternoon, students saw a gripping, modern version
of 'Twelfth Night,' a year 8 text studied in English lessons. They weathered a
bit of cold and the true Shakespearean experience by standing as 'groundlings,'
viewing the play from only inches away. Students remarked that the day was
'awesome' and that 'it was really cool to actually see what we learn about.'
Students' behaviour was impeccable and it was a pleasure
to accompany such wonderfully well-behaved, polite, intelligent learners; the
English department was pleased to see them appreciate a day of curricular and
cultural enrichment.
