Wednesday: Activities Week
ZooLab
Students had the opportunity to learn about a range of creatures that they would not normally come into contact with. They were able to ask questions and understand further information about their food and habitat.| A Tarantula with a pink back. |

Student Leaders in Action
Student leaders from Year 9 and 10 planned and organised a football competition for their peers.
Other students went to the theatre to see the production of Matilda and there was a trip to see Harry Potter World. Mr Hough took a group of students to The London Sea Life Aquarium Centre. All the staff reported on the excellent behaviour of our students and that they engaged by asking appropriate and interesting questions.

Tuesday: Activities Week
Eggineering
Students had to plan and make a transport system for eggs, to get them as far from the launch pad as possible, without breaking the egg. The designs were well thought out and testing proved to be an exciting, even with the most unreliable of designs!
Maths in Action
It may have rained during the day but it did not dampen the enthusiasm for rocket building and learning about the trajectory of the flight path. There were occasions when Miss Chandler had to take over priming the rockets to ensure they took off!

Mathematics: Problem Solving
“Up, Up and Away”
On Monday 30th June, a group of year 10 students
were taken to Brooklands Museum in Weybridge to take part in “Up, Up and Away”
– a Maths and Science day organised for gifted and talented year 4 students
from Surrey primary schools. The year 10s were there to mentor and
support the learning of a group of year 4s as they took part in workshops and
maths trails around the museum.
The students thoroughly enjoyed the opportunity to explore
Brooklands Museum, and were a credit to the school, looking after and helping
the younger students to work as a team designing and building a
parachute.
Year 10 Maths Master Class
On Friday 27th June, a small group of gifted year 10 mathematicians took part in the Year 10 Maths Master Class. They were first set the task of solving the Open Box Problem before investigating the gradient functions of linear, quadratic and cubic graphs, by drawing a tangent at set values of x and finding the gradient at these points. Connections were quickly made, results agreed upon and students were taught they had been introduced to the first principles of Differentiation. They were then able to form an algebraic equation for the volume of the open box and differentiate it to solve the problem – a useful introduction to Calculus.
Year 5 Maths Master Class
On Thursday 26th June a group of year 5 students
from local primary schools, who already take part in the Winston Maths
Enrichment Programme, took part in the Year 5 Maths Master Class – Big and
Beautiful Numbers. The session involved them appreciating the size of
very large and very small numbers and led to them learning the skill of writing
these numbers in Standard Form. They then moved on to investigating the
Fibonacci Sequence and its connection to the Golden Ratio. After a break
for squash and biscuits (the majority voting in favour of the squash made up in
the Golden Ratio) the students then embarked upon the task of measuring
different parts of their bodies to see if any were in the Golden Ratio.
We did find a few mathematically beautiful students!
Cash in the Mathemattic
This week in maths has been Cash in the Mathemattic
week. Students have been learning about maths and its link to personal
finance. Year 7 learnt about the costs involved when going on day trips
to places, including the cost of how to get there and the cost of the entry
ticket. Year 8 learnt about budgeting for and selecting a holiday as well
as activities to do whilst they are away. Year 9 learnt about the
different types of bank accounts, the importance of checking bank statements and
the costs involved when taking out a pay day loan. Year 10 learnt about
the amount of tax and national insurance that people need to pay from their
salary, how to budget based on their salary and the costs involved of owning a
car. In addition to this, the theme for assembly was tax and what it
actually goes to pay for. The £ was a frequent visitor to lessons giving
students, who had been awarded money for their work and contributions to class
discussions, the opportunity to win prizes.
Interform Maths Results
This week has seen the lower school taking part in maths
interform. Teams of 4, in years 7, 8 and 9 competed in three
rounds. The first was a cross number puzzle, like a cross word but with
numbers instead of words. The second was a tetras style challenge,
requiring them to cover up numbers to leave the highest possible total visible
. The third was a number relay race, combining their speed at running
with their speed at answering number problems. The teams had to use the
different skills they have learnt in maths and apply them in different
contexts, whilst being up against the clock and other forms in their year
group. The winners were:
Year 7: 7BGO
Year 8: 8FRU
Year 9: 9JBX
Congratulations to all the teams who took part in the competitions.

The Prom 2014
Year 11 at The Prom
Students from Year 11 enjoyed a fantastic evening on Saturday at the Savill Court Hotel. Their arrival in a number of magnificent vehicles parading up to the reception proved to be an amazing spectacle, enjoyed by a large crowd of staff and parents. Mr Scrivener and his team are extremely proud of the students. The PTA organised the event and decorated the ballroom beautifully, we could not run this event without their support. Below is just a selection of photographs from the evening.
