Winston News

Working with Wellington

Please click on the link below to see the Wellington College Teaching Schools Partnership Newsletter.  There is an article about Winston and perhaps you will be able to spot a photograph of Mr Parsons!

As well as this work, our very able students have a number of opportunities to be involved in master classes and learning activities at Wellington College, with students from other schools.  This has enabled students to be challenged in terms of their intellect and learning, resulting in the development of higher order thinking skills.

Performance Tables

When looking at the school performance tables, on the link below, click on the button to compare with similar schools.  A section of the table has been presented below.  It shows Winston in 7th position when compared with 55 similar schools, last year's position was seventeenth.  This again indicates the progress Winston has made in the last year.

Ofsted Comes To Winston

The Ofsted Inspection

A team of five Ofsted Inspectors and two trainees spent two days at Winston assessing the school with regard to attainment, behaviour, teaching and leadership.  The process is very intensive following the first contact from the lead inspector at 12.10pm on Monday 26th January.  The focus of the inspection is the students and the progress they make over time.  As usual our students were very impressive.  I would like to thank everyone involved in the inspection process, staff, students and the parents who took the time to complete parent view.  The report will not be published for at least four weeks, as Ofsted have changed their quality assurance procedures.

Performance Tables

School performance tables were published on Thursday and can be found at:

http://www.education.gov.uk/cgi-bin/schools/performance/school.pl?urn=125314

These tables contain a large amount of detail which is of interest to parents.  I am delighted with the progress that Winston has made over the last 18 months and this is reflected in the tables.

The LRC

The LRC opened the Spring Term with the Scholastics Book Fair, and it was a huge success! Not only in book sales, which vastly outweighed expectations given events held in previous years, but in interest and engagement. All of the Key Stage 3 students had the opportunity to come to the fair during an English lesson, and they all demonstrated a real enthusiasm in looking critically at the books.
Of course I couldn’t let the fair go without getting some books for the library, ensuring those that proved most popular are here for all to enjoy. There are plenty more new additions to the library catalogue this term. New spinners full of Graphic Novels (which are proving very popular now that they have been repositioned) and new ‘Easy Read’ titles.
Look out for some very exciting additions this term as we continue our commitment to modernising and revitalising what is an integral resource for students.

Girls and Science

Miss Perkins organised a workshop, run by the STEM ambassadors, for girls who may think that a science/maths/technology career is not for them, perhaps because they are unsure of the wide range of possible careers available. If you are interested in further information please follow this link:
