This Week...

The Share Game

Here’s some photographs on the Year 10 students in GCSE Business Studies. They have been learning about buying shares on the stock exchange and public limited companies. They have £10,000 to invest in shares and each week they will track the share prices to see who has made or lost the most money by the end of term!

The LRC

This was an exciting week in the LRC. We have not only been maximising the space, but maximising how it is used. Year 9 tutor groups have enjoyed LRC Time before first period, able to sit and read or play chess and take out books. Year 7s have enthusiastically begun their LRC inductions, the first of their fortnightly library lessons in their English classes. All of this has helped us loan more than 100 books this week! A number which we hope to build exponentially upon next week as we continue inductions.
Coming up in the LRC very soon is Bookbuzz and the announcement of an inter-form reading competition with a very exciting prize!
Keep up with our goings on on Twitter @wcsclrc ; read more on our blog http://wcsctww.blogspot.com ; and now help stack our bookshelves on Pinterest @wcsclrc.

Assembly

Assemblies , this week, have been on the theme of standards.  I talked to students and posed some challenging questions about the behaviours needed to ensure that they are successful at Winston.  Some of the slides can be found below.  Being ready and willing to learn is essential to success and students need to be resilient and keep trying as they face new challenges.  I have told students that there is no place for the phrase 'I can't' at Winston and we are all going to use the words 'I'll try'.

The PTA Meeting

The PTA Meeting took place on Thursday 10th September.   This is an enthusiastic group of parents who want to ensure that the school can provide the best resources for our students.  If you agree with this aim then please support the work of this group.  You could either offer some time to raise funds or make donation to the PTA or shop online through the Easygiving website (the link is via the PTA section of the school website.  Help us to provide great facilities for your child.

Eat Well at Winston

Amazing Food at Winston

 Great, interesting salads available everyday.

A choice of delicious hot meals.

Encourage your child to try the meals as they are very tasty and excellent value for money

Freshers' Fair

Year 7 Freshers' Fair

Year 7 students spent Wednesday morning at the Freshers' Fair, exploring all of the extra-curricular opportunities preovided by the school.  They were able to talk to our prefects and sign up to join the groups that take place every day after school.  Apart from the horse riding club, the activities are free and open to all our students.  There was a huge buzz of excitment in the sports hall and students signed up for a number of opportunities.

Library Developments

New beginnings in the LRC this term!

We've created bright and comfortable reading spaces with sofas, beanbags and floor cushions. Moving the shelves around the room has a much better flow that encourages browsing, with shelves nearly organised books clearly displayed, and bright signage makes it easy to look for particular books.

The excitement of this refreshed space is built upon as we look forward to next week, when we introduce our new year 7 students to the LRC as they have the first of their fortnightly LRC sessions with their English classes. This gives them regular opportunities to investigate their own interests searching the shelves, as well as time to sit in a calm and comfortable space to simply read. We also invite our year 9s to visit the LRC during morning tutor time, to browse and borrow books and for independent reading.

Keep up to date with the progress we're making in the LRC by following us on Twitter @wcsclrc and check out our dedicated blog: http://wcsctww.blogspot.com

New Year, High Expectations

Welcome Year  7

I am delighted that Year 7 have made such a positive start to their school career at Winston.  They have created a very good impression, both as they move around the school and in their first lessons.  Year 7 will also have the opportunity to participate in some extra-curricular taster sessions next week before making their choices at the Freshers' Fair!  The programme follows these pictures.

The Site

The changes to the site have been welcomed by the students.  They have enjoyed the new servery sited on the patio, as well as the changes to the learning environments in Maths and History.  The canteen development is a huge success.  We are now waiting for new curtains to be hung in the hall to complete the refurbishment.

Studio Success

Alex Wood, our Studio technician, has been busy encouraging the use of these great facilities during the evenings and at weekends.  Recently a band was professionally filmed recording in the studio. Alex mixed and mastered the sound.
