Our School

Working on Glass

We have installed new glass walls in room 28 to replace white boards and pin boards.  The coloured glass brightens up the room, provide an excellent surface to work collaboratively and are now being used in a number of ways.

Winston at Harlequins

'The Winston Churchill School were extremely lucky to have been invited to participate in the Rugby Festival hosted by Harlequins Rugby Club, at their home ground 'The Stoop', last week. With thanks to Premiership Rugby this festival was hosted by a number of players from Harlequins Ladies (including Leah Lyons, Jade Konkel & Becky Rowe) and their Elite Academy Squad (including Hugh Tizard, Jack Mush, George Hammond & Luke James).

This festival focussed on introducing girls to the sport, so we took 31 female students who were coached by these professionals. They took part in several drills with the emphasis on 'fun' and managed to put their learnt skills into action by playing a mini tournament at the end of the day. The students had an amazing time and demonstrated excellent manners in representing the school. Here are just a few photographs illustrating this:

As a school we hold a girls rugby extra-curricular club on Wednesdays so please come along and give it a go! Harlequins are also hosting a 2 day camp on 25th & 26th October with Harlequins & England player Rachael Burford. Please go to www.rugbycamps.co.uk/harlequins for more information and bookings.

Art Attack: The Heart

On Tuesday 25th September, a class of GCSE PE students where split into two teams and asked to put their creative flair and prior learning to the test. Using socks, cones, spare kit, benches and whatever other bits and bobs I could find the students had to create a fully labelled diagram demonstrating the journey of blood around the body. Both teams showed superb ingenuity and collaboration during the task and everyone contributed in some way to the completion of their own 'big art'. Winston Water

Protecting Our World One Bottle at a Time!

Our students asked us to consider improving the fresh water supply at Winston and so Mr Phillips, our Business Manager, set to work researching the options. In April I delivered an assembly that demonstrated just how many plastic bottles of water were being used in school every week.  The point was made and over the summer break the first water dispensers were installed.  They have been a great success and two more will follow, one in the English Block and one at the entrance to RE.

Banned water bottles                             Acceptable water bottles

Each dispenser has a counter so that the students can see the number of plastic bottles being saved by refilling their drinking bottle.  Catering Academy will gradually try to reduce other drinks bottles, as manufacturers develop the way they package their product.

Thank you to everyone involved with the project; the total number of refills so far this term is in excess of 6000, that is 6000 less bottles damaging our environment.

Developing Facilities

Students have a lovely new area at the back of our new library.  The tiered seating is covered with Astroturf to ensure that it is comfortable and dry!!

Our Library

Students are enjoying all aspects of our new facility and I want them to take every opportunity to use this great new space.
The library is open from 8.00am until 5.00pm every day except for Friday when it closes at 3.00pm.  Please encourage your children to make use of this time.

BBC School Report

Winston's BBC School Report

Winston students turned into reporters to take part in BBC School Report.  They planned their approach and identified key areas of interest and then set about researching and organising interviews. The areas covered were wide ranging and students clearly felt passionate about their investigations. Click on the link to see the amazing work completed by our students.

The Winston PE Reporters were delighted to welcome Amy Allcock back to Winston.  Amy is a highly successful British athlete who attended The Winston Churchill School.  You can see the report on our BBC School Report website.  Thank you to Amy for taking the time to come into school it was appreciated.

Polly, from Year 8, did a fantastic job in representing the school on BBC Surrey radio’s ‘Drive at Five’ show at around 5.50pm yesterday. She spoke very eloquently about her experiences of School Report and the relevance of Latin in today’s world!
