The Science of Raising Agents
The students in 8WE have recently been looking at the science behind different raising agents.
They spent a lesson investigating how a range of different factors can impact on the development of carbon dioxide and how yeast can thrive on simple sugars After this session they went and made delicious looking Soda bread using alternative raising agents, as well as buttermilk or yoghurt/ lemon juice.

Year 7 Girls Football Team
Our team played in the Quarter Final of the County Cup. This is our team: Brooke W, Rebecca W, Grace T, Gracie P, Emma B, Asya
D, Charlotte G, Izzy H, Erin P, Millie S, Lily W and Erin G. We played at home
on the 6th February. In the first half Brooke W scored our first
goal. Blenheim passed it around us and
had many opportunities but our defence was very strong. Then Brooke W scored
again. The next goal came from Emma B which was powered into the bottom corner following a
great pass from Gracie P. Once the whistle went we all ran over to Miss Exworth
and she complemented us and pointed out the points we could improve. We were
all thinking twenty five minutes until we are in the semi-final. When we came back on we had a few more chances
and then Grace T scored from an amazing through a ball from Brooke W. Next came
Emma B’s goal. Then Brooke W scored her next goal which gave her a super
hat-trick. Gracie P then took it past two players and passed it into the bottom
corner making it 7-0. Finally, Izzy H smashed the ball in the net finishing the
game 8-0.
Into the Semi Finals we go!!!

'Foundation Switch' Programme
On Monday 11th February we took a diverse group of girls from years 7,8 & 9 to attend a girls rugby festival hosted by Harlequins Rugby Club with their 'Foundation Switch' programme. Some of these girls had played some rugby before, and some were completely new to the sport. The day was jam-packed with various drills and workshops led by Harlequins rugby players and coaches. The emphasis was on fun, learning new skills and simply getting involved.
A series of games then took place so the girls could apply what they had learnt. The day ended with a group of exhausted and exhilarated girls with muddy knees, faces and PE kits! We asked them to sum up the day for us, to which they shouted:
"Today has inspired us to play the game of rugby and to join more school sports clubs to learn even more skills"
"It was brilliant fun and it helped us to overcome our fears and not to panic when passing"
"Rugby gives you so much confidence!"
"It was really fun and improved my teamwork skills"
"I think it was a brilliant teamworking experience and we had fun learning new skills"
"The PE teachers and coaches were very encouraging and kind"
"It was a fun experience and we stepped our of our comfort zone"
"Because we enjoyed rugby so much today we will go to rugby club at school every Wednesday!"
The Winston Churchill School is very proud of the relationship that we have with Harlequins Ladies Rugby Club. Our school participates in their 'Foundation Switch' programme, and their commitment is to grow and develop the women's game by creating a pathway from grassroots to elite International rugby.
We both share the desire to increase accessibility and participation for girls and to provide the right opportunities to take part in rugby. Our partnership then focuses on developing and supporting their progression, and further encouraging their participation across many different sports.
To continue with this development and enthusiasm we have a Harlequins Ladies rugby player come every Wednesday after school to coach and develop our girls. So, parents PLEASE encourage your daughters to attend these sessions, and students, PLEASE encourage your friends to join you and share in the fun!
If you need more information on this club, or any after school sport club then please contact Mrs Walton (s.walton@wcsc.org.uk).

G&T AND BOYS FOOTBALL
Recently our cohort of Gifted and
Talented students had the opportunity to take part in a strength and
conditioning session. The focus looked at agility and the correct movement
patterns required for efficient transfer of body weight. This was delivered by
Chris Walton Consultancy who used a variety of demanding but fun exercises that
also challenged the cognitive function of our students. It was highlighted that
those who participated now have the responsibility of focusing and applying
what was learnt into their sporting sessions. We look forward to providing
events in the upcoming months that look at resilience, growing pains in sport
and performance analysis.

Huge congratulations to the U13
& U15 Boys Futsal teams who have both qualified for the Surrey County
Futsal Finals later this month. This is the first year that Surrey have run a
Futsal county tournament which will lead into Regional and National
competitions for the winners. Both the U13’s and U15’s showed great teamwork,
skill and composure to finish top in their respective tournaments, winning all
their games. A pleasure to take these boys who represented the school so well
on and off the pitch.

Winston hosted the annual boys district
6-a-side tournament for all year groups earlier this term, which gave a huge
number of schools and students the opportunity to play and compete against one
another. The Yr8’s and Yr11’s won their respective tournaments despite the cold
and snowy conditions. A special mention to our Sport Prefects who helped
throughout the week with the organisation, collection and tabling of results,
as well as refereeing every game which allowed for each tournament to run
smoothly.
