Interested in Law and Politics?

Mr Ho, Mr Allen and Miss Butcher are setting up a Law and Politics Debating Club. Timed conveniently to address the current political climate, they are launching the club on Wednesday 20th March. It will be running weekly from 3-4 in the Discovery Space and will be open to all years.

There are posters into tutor wallets and a notice on frog.
Tutors will be encouraging students to attend.

Year 9 Girls' Netball Team

On Tuesday 19th March our Year 9 Girls Netball team, made up by Christi S, Genna V, Mara O-C, Olivia S, Phoebe T, Emma P, Shinal P and Kiera Heney, travelled to SJB school to take part in the County Netball tournament.  An invitation to this prestigious event, only possible as a result of the team winning the district tournament the week before!

With a mix of emotions- nerves and confidence, the girls entered the A team pool- facing opponents like Rosebery, Magna Carta, and Broadwater. The girls fought hard after loosing their first game, they won the next two, and lost their last. However, they did enough to get through to the semi final play offs: only the top 4 teams of the tournaments left to play!

At this point the team played Howard of Effingham- a toe to toe game, where each goal counted. By the end of the 8 minute game, both teams were tied- meaning the final decision went down to 'golden goal', or next goal wins. Unfortunately for the Winston team, the Howard girls got in a last minute goal meaning they progressed to the finals. However, full of pride, our team entered their final game: The 3rd and 4th play offs.

With parents, and other schools gathered to watch the Y9s demonstrated just how good they were- with flying interceptions from Phoebe, some great jumps and intricate passing from Mara and Genna, consistent shooting from Christi and Kiera and top draw defence from Mara, Shinal and Emma, the girls won. This landed them in the prestigious position of 3rd place. The girls were awarded bronze medals, certificates and the pride of being the third best team in the County! An amazing achievement that they should all be incredibly proud of!

The PE department wishes to congratulate them, and of course, keep up the good work next season!

Being the Best You Can Be!

Year 10 District Basketball

A huge congratulations to the Year 10 Boys Basketball team as they were crowned District Champions last week with a hard fought 38-32 victory over SJB. Going into the match with 0 subs the odds were stacked against the 5 boys knowing they would have to work twice as hard as their opponents who had the luxury of rotating players throughout the match. The boys set off at 100mph and quickly realised after the first quarter that for them to have any chance they would have to dictate the pace of the game, slow it down and pick SJB off.
With Anthony being double teamed it created plenty of space for the rest of the side which allowed Ben and Dwayne to score vital points with many key assists coming from James just before the half way stage to give Winston a two point advantage. As the match went on it was surprisingly SJB who began to tire. This resulted in them rushing shots, while Winston kept a cool head and with Dwayne and Jos playing like animals under the basket snatching every rebound the lead began to grow and SJB’s levels of frustration began to increase.
A majestic 3 pointer from Anthony at the beginning of the 4th followed by the same from Jos gave Winston the cushion they were looking for before a beautifully timed Time Out Call from Coach Weale allowed the team to close the game out with some sensible play and ever solid defence. A huge congratulations to the boys on a thoroughly well-deserved hard fought victory. Very worthy Champions!!!

U15 HANDBALL

The U15 boys were entered into the Surrey County School Games Handball competition. The squad was made up of 1 x Yr8, 2 x Yr9’s and 6 x Yr10’s. For all this was their 1st competitive experience of Handball and was an opportunity to put into practice what they had been learning in their Handball lessons during PE.
Despite coming up against teams who train regularly and play for clubs outside of school the team finished in 3rd place.
It was a great learning experience and the boys now have a greater appreciation for the demands of Handball. Reading Handball club were also in attendance to officiate the games and offer words of advice to each team to help improve their game.

GIFTED & TALENTED PE

Our G&T PE cohort had the opportunity to spend some time with Synergy Physiotherapists in St John’s. The purpose of the session was to gain more information on injuries and the myth of ‘growing pains’. The group got to discuss their sporting injuries, the pains they get commonly in their knees and how to stretch effectively to reduce the chance of injury. The session was very informative from an anatomical and practical point of view and highlighted the fact that many of our G&T cohort need to focus on knee strength and their flexibility. Thank you to Synergy Physiotherapists for hosting.

Success!

Year 7 Girls
County Finalists!

On the 13th March we played Hinchley Wood School. The squad included Asya, Izzy, Brooke, Gracie, Grace, Rebecca, Emma, Erin, Annabel, Charlotte, Erin, Millie and Catrin. This was a very important game as it was the Semi-Final of the County Cup. We had to win to go through to the final.
We arrived at the School and we had our game faces on. The whistle blew and the game started and they were very good as they passed it around us and they had many chances. But then, Brooke W intercepted the ball and ran all the way down the pitch using her electric pace. She then crossed it to Grace T and she placed it into the bottom corner of the goal making it 1-0. The whistle blew again with their kick off. They nearly scored but Erin P made the first dive of the game and saved it. Erin P then passed it to the defence and Charlotte G passed it to Gracie P who took on their players. She then passed a through ball to Grace T who delivered again by slotting it into the net. We could not believe it we were two goals ahead. Not long after this the whistle went for half time.

Miss Exworth made it very clear that we were 35 minutes away from a County Cup final. We went back on the pitch and we intercepted a run from them but they got it back and hit a great strike into the goal which made it 2-1. It all became very nerve racking.  Both teams were playing well with lots of possession and the final could go either way.  Erin P passed the ball out to Grace T who got the ball and smashed it into the middle of the goal! After eight very tense minutes the final whistle blew, we are in the final!  We shook all their hands and went and celebrated in the bus with sweets and chocolate from Miss Exworth.

Into the final we go!

U13 BOYS FUTSAL
Futsal National Finalists

Basic Rules of Futsal. Futsal is a five-a-side game, normally played on a flat indoor pitch with hockey sized goals and a size four ball with a reduced bounce. It is played to touchlines and all players are free to enter the penalty area and play the ball over head height.

After winning the District Futsal tournament this meant the Yr8 boys progressed into the County Futsal Finals. The standard of competition was significantly higher and a good test for the team. After starting slowly the boys quickly picked up the pace and showed their potential, easing their way into the final vs. Howard of Effingham. The final was tightly contested, finishing 1-1 which meant penalties. Ben S pulled off 2 saves in the shootout meaning the boys won the County Finals and went through to the South East Regionals held in Bedford.

The Regional Finals proved to be a trickier test for the boys coming up against some talented individuals from different counties across the South East. Again the boys started slowly but dominated some teams winning 3-0, 5-1 and 9-1. A highlight was Cameron G’s rainbow flick over a defender before sliding the ball between the keeper’s legs into the goal. Into the semi-finals, which after 14 minutes finished 2-2, meant penalties again. This time the boys were on the losing end and had to settle for a 3rd/4th playoff game. Despite the disappointment the boys picked themselves up and performed valiantly to win against Kennet School.

This means the team now go onto the National Competition at the PlayFootball Indoor Centre in Birmingham at the end of March!

Some very exciting news!

The Challenge

Year 9 - Surrey University Engineering Island

On Monday 11th March, 15 Year 9 students visited the University of Surrey to take part in a day of Engineering workshops.

At the beginning of the day, students were informed of the many areas that involved Engineering as well as possible career paths. The three practical sessions that followed focused around survival on a desert island; building a structure for shelter, a bridge to access water and a raft to go fishing on. In their groups students had to use all of the Winston competencies to plan, build and evaluate the structures that they had made before testing them against other groups. During one task the Winston students were also asked to problem solve and work collaboratively with students of another school, showing the importance of team work in a career setting.

In between workshops students got to ask questions about university and were invited on a campus tour by some of the university student ambassadors to understand what it's like to study and live on campus. A free lunch at the university cafe was also a highlight for many! Overall, a productive day that allowed everyone to gain greater insight into the world of university and engineering.

Celebration Break

I was delighted to spend some time with students who are making a difference at Winston. Each one is making a positive contribution and we had time over hot chocolate and lovely cakes to talk about their work and their successes.

Assembly

Mr Jennings has been taking assemblies this week, on the theme of rising to the challenge and being prepared to overcome a difficulty to achieve your goal.

Learning at Winston

Balance in Year 8

Year 8 students have been working in paired balances including counter balance and counter tension, as well as symmetry and asymmetry. On Wednesday they had an extra challenge, as they were set the task of building new trust relationships and combining their work, creating balances in larger groups.
They had to consider and develop ideas, plan the balance and who was take which role, listen to each other and be fully engaged to that the balance was effective. Some groups “overcame stuckness” and had to demonstrate resilience, as they attempted their balance which wasn’t, at first, very effective; they adapted the balance or positions for a more effective result.

Bring a Book to Life!

As a part of our World Book Week celebrations, the library hosted a book art competition. Students were given the brief to use an old book (one that they were happy and most importantly allowed to use!) and create an original piece of art. Below are just some of the amazing entries that are now on display in the Discovery Space.

Well done to all those that entered! Winner will be announced next week...

Behind Closed Doors

Year 9 students have had the opportunity to watch and then participate in discussion groups, a production with the theme of domestic violence.  Students became immersed in the play and where audibly shocked by the final scene.  The theatre company then worked with the students to draw out the themes and to consider what positive relationships look like and how to respect each other.

Opportunities at Winston

Former Editor of The New Statesman at Winston

John Kampfner, former Chief Executive of the Creative Industries Federation and Editor of the New Statesman from 2005-2008, gave an inspiring and aspirational talk to over 100 students from The Winston Churchill School this week.

John’s visit to school was organised through Speakers4Schools, a charitable organisation founded by Robert Peston, aimed at giving students within the State sector access to insights, information and perspectives from top influential figures to help them in preparing for their own futures.

John talked at length about his career as a foreign correspondent with The Daily Telegraph, first in East Berlin where he reported on the fall of the Berlin Wall and the unification of Germany and then as a reporter in Moscow at the time of the dissolution of the Soviet Union. He went on to become chief political correspondent at The Financial Times and political commentator for the BBC’s Today programme.

John spoke to the students about the importance of setting clear goals in life and about the importance of valuing yourself, as an individual, whilst also valuing the people with whom you work. He spoke at length about the ways in which the world of work has changed over the generations and how important it is to not let anyone, be they parents or teachers, define students’ levels of success. He spoke passionately about the necessity for teenagers to be able to define their own success and that hard work and enthusiasm is a vital component to any students’ level of success.

Speaking after the event, Simon Donaldson, Head of Performing Arts at the school said,

” Speakers4Schools is a wonderful charity in which hugely influential figures within the UK give up their time freely and without restriction for the benefit of inquiring students in the state education sector. Last year, we were inspired by the visit of Tim Davie, Chief Executive of BBC Worldwide, who spoke about the sheer range and depth of BBC productions across the world and Lindsey Hilsum from Channel 4 news, who provided our students with a remarkable insight into the extraordinary life of a working War Correspondent''.

We are all looking forward to continuing our excellent relationship with Speakers4Schools.”

Pictured in the photograph are some of the students who attended the Speakers4Schools event, alongside John Kampfner.

Year 9 Girls' Rugby

This class have covered passing, tackling and rucking with some application into game situations. Today we look the skill of the scrum outside of the game and learnt why we have a scrum and how to perform an effective 5 man scrum. The girls quickly learnt about the importance to drive the legs and stay low and flat in the scrum and how to reduce the risk of collapse. They all experience front row and second row within the scrum, and we can’t wait until next week when we will apply all these skills into controlled games. As a result of these rugby lessons a number of the girls are attending Girls' Rugby Club after school on a Wednesday, which is run by Harliquins Rugby Club.
