Year 11 Celebrate

Year 11 Leavers' Day

A day of three parts!

First year 11 faced their GCSE English examination; 2.  hours of intellectual challenge and the opportunity to demonstrate their knowledge and skills.

From the examination hall, the students made their way up to the field to relax and celebrate with their friends.  Awaiting them a bouncy assault course, BBQ, Year Books, Hoodies and games.  There was plenty of music and laughter, as well as book and shirt signing!
The sun shone and everyone had a great time.

Part 3:  By 1.40pm the Main Hall had been prepared for the Leavers' Celebration Assembly.

Planned and driven by the students with the support of Mr Harrington-Tucker and Mr Fricker, it was a loud and lively mix of music and sketches reflecting life at Winston.

Year 11 have been amazing and they have made a huge contribution to the life of the school.  They are the first Year Group that I recruited to the school and I am so proud of what they have achieved.

I wish them success in the remaining GCSE examinations and look forward to seeing all of the students in August to collect their results.

The Year Team at Rest!
Thank you to a great team of tutors, under the leadership of Mr Fricker, for supporting our students.

Woking Ladies

On Tuesday 30th April Miss Exworth and Miss Singleton took the Year 7 Girls Football Team to The Woking Kingsfield stadium, to watch a very important football match: Woking Ladies VS Binfield Ladies. This was the last game in the Woking side’s title fight for the league!
The Winston girls settled in on the front row, ready to support the local women’s' side! They watched on as the Woking team pulled out in front, ending the first half 2-0. Winston, cheering and clapping all of the lady's teams success.
The second half started and it wasn’t long before the Binfield side won a penalty. 2-1! The Woking team, did not give up, however and the final score was 4-1.
It was a late night, with the game finishing around 9.30pm, but Winston watched as the Ladies enjoyed their match success. Witnessing the result of hard work, passion, and resilience. It was an important lesson for Miss Exworth and Miss Singleton to show their Year 7 side: that they can triumph under pressure, that they can work hard for the results they deserve and that working as a team can get them every success on the football pitch. The girls discussed their upcoming Cup Final (to be played that Thursday) on the mini bus drive home, and they were all fired up and ready for the challenge that would face them at Leatherhead Youth Football Club!

Habitat Projects

8CG have been working on a project that explores the habitats of a number of species.  I hope you enjoy the outcomes.

Year 8 Girls Rugby Team

On the 14th May we visited The Harlequins Stoop stadium to take part in the last of many rugby tournaments that took place throughout this year's season. We participated in a series of matches and our newly put together Year 8 girls team scored the highest in our grouping, winning EVERY match. Our players acted with respect and dignity towards the opposing teams, congratulating them after every match. Unfortunately, due to technical difficulties when adding up all the scores, our Y8 Winston team should have played in the final for 1st place, but sadly didn't. We were however very gracious in accepting this on the day and applauded the school who were actually presented with !st place and overall winners. The organisers were honest about their mistake and said that we were shining examples of what the tournament is all about, focusing on respect, teamwork, sportsmanship and enjoyment. We can feel very proud about ourselves as we all did amazing!

A special shoutout to the girls involved  -  Matilda Battershell, Ayesha Thompson, Emily Veats, Amelie Brooks, Ellen Turner-Gadd, Scarlett Dawson, Joely Hartwell, Isla Berriman, Emma Huang, Rebecca Strang, Sama Alafifi & Angel Abraham (Sama & Angel truly embodied sportsmanship and kindly went an played for Hinchley Wood School as they were short of players).

Well done to those who had never played before - let's hope for a successful rugby season next year! REMEMBERHarlequins will be back at Winston every week coaching rugby after school for all girls.

Year 7 Girls Rugby Team

The Y7 rugby girls were invited to a tournament at the Twickenham Stoop. It was the final rugby Switch festival with Harlequins. We played 3 games and we improved our rugby skills. We worked together as a team by collaborating and communicating. We learnt to ruck, to scrum and to tackle as well. By trying out rugby we are now inspired to join a club and continue developing our skills. We look forward to the next season!

National Champions!

U13 Futsal National Champions!

⚽⚽⚽⚽⚽⚽⚽⚽⚽⚽⚽⚽⚽⚽⚽⚽⚽⚽⚽⚽⚽⚽⚽⚽⚽⚽⚽⚽⚽

On Friday 3rd May, The Winston Churchill School took part in the Boys U13 National Futsal Final vs. Tanfield School at St George's Park, the FA national football centre.

The team travelled up to Burton upon Trent the night before in preparation, enjoying the hospitality of the local Premier Inn. This allowed the boys to relax and bond as a group before their highly anticipated final.

Upon arriving to St George's Park, the team were shown to one of the England dressing rooms before warming up on the England Futsal court. Both teams were then given an official walk out to a chorus of cheers from both sets of supporters.

Tanfield School started on top and took the lead early on in a competitive game. The team did well to avoid conceding again, battling through most of the 1st half. However, Winston scored an equaliser via Jack P 1 minute before half time. This gave the boys the momentum in the 2nd half, playing some great Futsal and becoming the more dominant team. With 5 minutes to go Louie S calmed the nerves with a delicately placed free kick. Tanfield School had to commit men forward to get an equaliser but Winston were able to defend valiantly, with some great saves from Ben S, enabling Winston to catch them out on the counter attack, scoring another to secure a 3-1 win.

The boys were each presented with a winners medal before lifting the trophy in front of both sets of supporters. A quick look around St George's Park followed before setting off home. It was an experience that will live long in the memory for these boys.

Futsal is technically and tactically different from normal football and therefore the boys have had to learn and apply new methods in a short space of time. Throughout each stage of the competition they have all shown a high level of work ethic, resilience and sportsmanship, playing at an intensity like I have seen in no other competition. We are all extremely proud of their achievement. Thank you to the parents who have also supported the boys throughout, it was great to see some of you at the final too!

Well done Year 8 and congratulations and thank you to Mr Martin, your Team Coach.

Winning at Winston

Year 7 Girls' County Cup Success

On Thursday 2nd May Miss Exworth, Miss Singleton and the Year 7 Girl’s football team travelled to Leatherhead Youth Football Club to attend the County Cup Final.
This was a greatly anticipated game, for which the girls had fought hard in previous rounds! On arrival, the girls quickly clocked the trophy and medals that they were there to win. Game faces on.
The players were given their final warm up tops and set straight to work at warming up, and getting match ready.

As the first half kicked off the opposition, Ursuline, looked like a strong side, with players shooting at Erin Philps (in goal) from the half way line. Winston, staying calm under pressure started the score sheet with a superb goal from striker Brooke Wayte 1-0, from some lovely passing play starting all the way from the defensive back line.
Ursuline upped their game and equalised within 5 minutes. The players' parents all on the side lines watching anxiously as the score became 1-1.
Within in minutes, a marvellous ball from Emma Bailey in defence started a run along the wing from Grace Timberlick, resulting in a second goal for Brooke. 2-1.
The parents shouted encouragement to help the Winston girls retain their lead until half time. The halftime whistle went, time for a very important team talk. The players had identified that their opponents had two very strong players and independently decided it was time to isolate them out of the game and try to hold them back. Then the second half started with a very determined Winston team.

The first kick off had the Ursuline striker again taking her chance from half way, they were getting desperate to equal the score. But Winston responded positively with a third incredible goal from Brooke which made it 3-1. Elation on the sidelines!!!
Millie Smith fought for everything in the middle, helping Winston retain possession, whilst Rebecca Wheeler and Charlotte Gallagher made sure the back line remained strong and solid. Substitutions were made an Asya Dumus and Isabel Heney came on to give new energy and attacking flare to the team. The clock, was running down!  The ref blew the whistle! The Winston girls had done it!! County Cup Champions for the first time since 2007!!!!
The girls shook hands and respectfully congratulated their opponents, who had remained resilient throughout. Then for the final ceremony. Parents, and players from the other school, and proud Winston parents watched on, with Miss Exworth and Miss Singleton, whilst the Winston Year 7 Girls team received their medals and then the trophy. Photographs were taken and celebrations had as the group enjoyed this amazing moment and huge achievement.
The PE department are extremely excited to see what this team will achieve next, and what next season may bring.
Please join us in congratulating them for an incredible show of footballing ability, sportsmanship and teamwork!

Well Done Girls!!!!!

Huge thank you to Miss Exworth and Miss Singleton for coaching the team and planning the strategy, to achieve at the highest level in the county.
