Still a Long Way to Go!

Next Steps!

Our new project is beginning to take shape.  Staff and students are delighted that the drilling has stopped!!

Drama During Lock-down!

Throughout the closure of schools, Drama students at The Winston Churchill School have come together in a wide scale extra-curricular community competition to re-create their favourite movie moments in a single freeze frame. Students and staff alike have spent their afternoons digitally editing or throwing together makeshift set and costumes in what became know as the Freeze Frame Challenge.

Each week, a winner was selected and displayed on the Drama home page. We were incredibly impressed with the skill and comedy behind so many of these submissions, from Forest Gump to Sharknado. Thanks to all of those who took part.

Twenty year 10 Drama students were invited to take part in a workshop and audition with London's prestigious National Youth Theatre (NYT).
The students were required to learn and perform a monologue for the visiting NYT representative after completing a challenging three hour workshop.
As a result of this, we are thrilled to say that three of our students were offered membership to the National Youth Theatre, which is an outstanding achievement and testament to the talent of young actors/ performers at Winston.
Year 7 and 8 Drama students were challenged to take part in a script writing assignment, consisting of at least five scenes and following a prescribed script writing format. We were overwhelmed with the number of entries that we received and will be publishing some of the very best entries on our Drama Portal on FROG over the next few weeks.

Making the most of Lockdown

GCSE Latin

Having just begun their GCSE Latin course, these Year 9 students were asked to create visual representations of the characters Echo and Narcissus form Ovid's Metamorphoses, and the results, as well as showing a clear understanding of characterisation, demonstrate incredible resourcefulness, ingenuity and inspiration!

                                                        Step 3
The holes are getting deeper and the noise from the drill is penetrating every room in the building but it will be worth it.  I have been busy selecting the colours and the flooring.  I am told it will be finished by 1st September 2020, ready for your return!

Lockdown Learning

Winston's Lockdown Learning Comes to Life!

We were proud to work with the Youth Sport Trust and Sky Sports to help unite the country through sport this summer with this year's National School Sport Week At Home, 20-26 June 2020. It was a great opportunity for all our different subject departments to come together and host lots of fun activities and learning challenges for all our students.

These learning activities ranged from:
  • Becoming a journalist and writing a sports commentary using emotive language;
  • Using recycled materials found at home to design and make your own sports trophies;
  • Bringing your language learning to life by describing iconic sports photographs in French & German;
  • Using your musical instruments to produce an Olympic Fanfare school compilation;
  • Researching and exploring the issue 'To what extent is there equality in sport?';
  • Present historical findings and opinions on how sport has made a contribution to changing society;
  • Experimenting at home to determine how science can help to improve your sport performance and technique;
  • Investigating whether music does help sport performance;
  • Solving sports problems using maths skills;

Mr Martin, who teaches both PE and Science was delighted by the engaging response their department had with the activities set:

 " Over National School Sports Week students had the opportunity to link Science and Sport with 8 different scientific tasks to choose from. This included looking at different experiments involving, reaction time, speed and heart rate recovery as well as getting a greater understanding of the cardio-vascular, muscular and skeletal systems. There is a huge amount of cross over between Science & Sport which can be applied to a variety of sporting situations and environments. KS3 students contributed heavily towards the tasks and showed a fantastic level of scientific understanding, some of which was to a GCSE standard. Going forward this will only help with their Science work and their understanding of Sport Science in their PE lessons."

Our mission is as always, to support, encourage and motivate our student's mindsets, their well-being and their confidence in all abilities. This is especially important right now given our circumstances and our students have risen to the challenge and demonstrated their potential!

Every student who participated in one or more of these challenges have exemplified their resilience, creativity and imagination and have brought their learning to life whilst at home, away from school.

We are so proud of every single student who embraced this and we would like for you to join us by celebrating their success. Please log onto your Frog account and view our amazing Photo & Video Gallery which you can access via this link:

Here are just a few examples of their Lockdown learning...
