What is Winston Reading?

Winston Book Week - Reading is Reading!

Next week, Monday 27th February - Friday 3rd March is Winston Book Week! Thursday 2nd March is World Book Day but here at Winston we like to go the extra mile, so not only will we be celebrating reading on this day, we have a week packed full of book and reading themed events for students to take part in. We want to really celebrate reading and encourage students to read in all different formats, whether that's a recipe, a magazine or a novel!
Please see the timetable below for all the different activities on offer. We are pleased to offer two author visits this year, Kirsty Applebaum for Year 7 and Andy Briggs for Year 8. These will include an assembly for the whole year group, along with 2 smaller workshops with a selection of students. Students have had the opportunity to register their interest for these workshops. Miss Dodds always holds a Bookworm Breakfast in the Library for those students who regularly help out in the Library. This is a lovely chance for them to chat with other avid readers over a hot chocolate about their favourite books!
Our Winston Swap Shop will be officially open! Students can bring in any books starting from Weds 22nd February that they've read and would like to donate to the Swap Shop and they will be given a coupon to exchange for another book next week during Book Week. This is housed in our telephone box in the Library.
Miss Dodds can't wait to see all the entries for the Book in a Box competition. They will be on display in the Library during Book Week and there will be prizes for the most creative, so get those entries in!
Watch this space for lots of photos and news from Winston Book Week at the end of next week.

Taiko Drumming

 Working Together

On Friday 10th February the Music Department welcomed the Hampshire Music Service Taiko Drumming team to The Performance Space at Winston. During the day four different groups of students took part in workshops. The first group to take part were our Year 10 Music leaders and their Year 7 instrumental students, and they were then followed by 7CM. After break our Year 10 GCSE Music students enjoyed putting together a full Taiko performance, and to end the day there was a workshop for a combined Year 8 and 9 group. Each of the groups was given the fantastic opportunity to try out all of the drums, which are part of the only complete set in the UK, putting together different pieces of music. The students involved were excellent, concentrating hard to ensure that their end of workshop performances were the best that they could be.

The BBC at Winston

 Careers Event

Before half-term, we were delighted to welcome the BBC to visit Winston, as part of their 100-year celebrations tour.  Throughout the day they did careers presentations to all of our Year 9 and 10 students.
Students were given the opportunity to find out more about careers at the BBC and ask questions about work in a creative industry.  They then saw a live interview with George Stroud and Rachel Fursman, who both work for the BBC.  George Stroud is a Composer and Rachel Fursman is a Senior Broadcast Journalist on the BBC news.

Well Done Year 8!

The Year 8 team organised a breakfast this morning for some students and their achievement in English. Students were picked based on their English books for presentation, hard work, and consistency throughout their books. It was a lovely event, enjoyed by all. Well done Year 8!
