The Results!

 Well Done Winston!

Examination outcomes are essential currency when moving on into post-16 provision and therefore, our Year 11 students were eager to know their individual outcomes on Thursday 24th August.

As was made clear by our government, 'Grading has returned to normal this year for the first time after the pandemic, in line with plans set out by Ofqual over two years ago. This is to ensure that grades maintain their value and pupils get the result that best represents their performance.'

Therefore, against the tougher 2019 outcomes, Winston has improved by a minimum of 2%.

Congratulations to our students and the staff who have supported them throughout their five years at Winston.

Aiming High

 Myth & Voice

This week saw the culmination of 2 opportunities offered by the Royal Holloway Classics Department, with a visit to the university for a seminar and campus tour.
Year 10 Latin students, following their literary workshop at Winston, led by Dr Efi, and their leadership of the same event with Year 8 students, participated in a seminar discussing Tacitus' presentation of war between the Romans and the Germans, concluding that this ancient text is about far more contemporary issues than it initially appears.
Year 9 students, following their creative writing workshops with Dr Efi, and having written their own pieces inspired by the myth of Orpheus & Eurydice, participated in a seminar led by the RHUL English department exploring perspective and characterisation and how to apply it in their own writing. The pieces they produced throughout the term will be published on the RHUL Classics Department's online gallery in the Autumn.
We're very grateful to Dr. Efi for continuing to provide opportunities for our students to engage with the Classical World, to develop their questioning, reasoning and ingenuity, and to experience university style learning.

Next year we're looking forward to Year 8 & 10 Myth & Voice and Year 9 Creative Writing Workshops.

The Match!

Winston Wanderers Vs. Churchill United -

⚽Match Report⚽

In the sweltering heat of Winston Stadium, the long-awaited derby match of Woking kicked off with both teams eager to claim victory. The tension was palpable, especially for the nervous Winston Wanderers, who were relieved when their top-rated striker, Sharpe, showed up just in time for kick-off.

The match started fiercely, with both teams going head-to-head, challenging each other for possession. Collins was instrumental in creating opportunities for Winston United, while Falzon attempted to get past the formidable Qureshi, but it seemed like an impossible task.

After some back and forth, Churchill United gained an opportunity, and Inwards Junior seized it, scoring the opening goal to give them a 1-0 lead. However, Winston Wanderers were quick to respond, as Jones powered through Churchill United's defence and levelled the score at 1-1.

Churchill United didn't waste time and countered immediately. A long ball found its way to Weale, who muscled Qureshi off the ball and scored, putting Churchill United back in the lead. Just as Winston Wanderers were planning their comeback, fate intervened when Collins, in the midst of a counter-attack, fell over and pulled his hamstrings, causing a stretcher-off moment into the crowds.

Churchill United's super-sub, Ionova, added to the excitement as she joined the action. The game resumed, and Inwards Senior proved to be a rock-solid defender, making it challenging for Winston Wanderers to penetrate.

However, the match wasn't without some controversy, as Weale and Qureshi's head-to-head battle resulted in an outrageous free kick being awarded to Churchill United. This is perhaps a moment for the Winston Stadium to consider investing into up-to-date VAR technology to avoid these instances in future events.

Inwards Junior stepped up to take the free kick and skilfully bent it like Beckham into the top corner, extending Churchill United's lead to 3-1 by halftime. Martin showcased his versatility, playing in every position imaginable for Churchill United, while Hough made countless saves for the Winston Wanderers, keeping the scoreline from getting worse. Meanwhile, Gatty couldn't resist showing off his skills, booting the ball to his imaginary friend...

Reid displayed his unconventional rugby skills to get the ball down the pitch. However, despite his chemistry with Jones, they couldn't actualise their chances of scoring. Fuller's impressive pace got ahead of himself somersaulting himself onto his shoulder and causing a potential fracture or dislocation, despite this he played on still leaving the Wanderers struggling to keep up. Webster surprised everyone with his hidden talent on the pitch, back heeling the ball over the Wanderer’s players. Some may say it was a fluke, others say its SLT’s best keep secret, only time will tell.

Harrington-Tucker took the role of a relentless man-marker, and Inwards Junior earned a yellow card for his spirited play. Markham displayed eagerness and skill, always making space and moving the ball. Gunnoo showed great promise but struggled to find the finishing touch, while Penfold held the fort in midfield for Churchill United.

Inwards Junior showcased his brilliance, completing a hat trick to extend Churchill United's lead. However, Sharpe's sly finish, assisted by Qureshi, narrowed the gap to 4-2. Falzon seized a counter-attack opportunity and slipped the ball past Hough, making it 5-2 in favour of Churchill United. The Wanderers, determined to make a comeback, saw Turner score with an assist from Jones, bringing the score to 5-3.

Holinshead's tireless pursuit of every ball kept the pressure on. Whilst Harding proved to be a formidable brick wall in defence, frustrating Churchill United’s further attempts to score

Eaton took control of the ball in midfield, creating opportunities for the Winston Wanderers, but they close the gap any further. In the dying moments, a final corner ball was taken by Eaton for the Wanderers, resulting in a scramble in the box. However, the ball was eventually booted out, and the full-time whistle was blown, ending Gatty's last-minute hopes of a counter-attack goal.

In the end, Churchill United emerged victorious with a final score of 5-3, but as they say, it's not just about the scoreline—it's about the passion, camaraderie, and fun in taking part in the game. Both teams put on an entertaining show, leaving the fans thoroughly entertained and eagerly awaiting the next showdown between the Winston Wanderers and Churchill United.
