Working Together

 New to Winston!

From September this will be our Year 7 cohort with their Year Leader, Miss Hazzlewood.

It was a pleasure to have all of our new children in school for two days and they cannot wait to be back in September ready to grasp all of the opportunities that Winston has to offer.

Looking Forward and Back

 Dates for your Diary!

There is always something taking place in our Music and Drama Departments.
Why not come and join us?

These opportunities are there for your child.
Let's encourage them to participate!

Gods & Heroes

Winston welcomed Mrs Kimani's Year 5 children, currently learning all about Ancient Greece at The Hermitage School, to workshop some famous Greek myths. Guided by GCSE Latin students, they collaborated in small groups to communicate a dramatic retelling of a different Greek myth. They had to read an understand the story, and consider the best way to demonstrate their understanding in a way that would convey the moral of the story to the rest of the class. And Winston students had to navigate how to lead their groups without dictating, to support their ingenuity.

The Year 5s were brilliantly engaged and we were impressed not only by the quality of their performances, by their confidence and communication, but especially by how effectively they listened and compromised to work together.

The Latin department is looking forward to inviting more primary students in the Autumn term for a Classics Taster Morning.

Latinam ediscete ad Winston!

Year 6 Induction Day 1

 Welcome New Year 7

I was delighted to welcome your children to Winston for the first of the Induction Days.  They came into their first assembly and began to realise that they are now part of something special.

Miss Hazzlewood, Year 7 Year Leader, organised the Induction Days and took the children through the plan, including, most importantly break and lunchtimes!

Children have been learning that the most important things that they can do at Winston is to
listen carefully and then participate.

Here are just a few images of day one:

Discovery in Science Club

 Leaf Chromatography

During science club, the students were able to demonstrate how different pigments present on a leaf using chromatography. The class began by cutting up leaves using a pestle and mortar along with salt until broken into small, fine pieces.
A small amount of ethanol was added and then the contents was placed into a test tube. Next, the test tube was placed in a beaker of water and heated using a Bunsen burner until the liquid was a green colour. The liquid was collected which contained the chloroplast pigment and placed on chromatography paper, to allow the solvent to climb up the paper.
Lastly the different pigments were marked with pencil. The students from all year groups really enjoy science club and attended Mr Pearson's practical sessions every week, where they work together to make and discover many new things.
