Eclipse at Winston

Eclipse at Winston

The Science Department organised for a number of students, with appropriate eye shields to go out to watch the eclipse, however, the cloud cover proved to be an issue

Creativity at Winston

Good News for Music

EMI Music Sound Foundation have made a grant of £750 to the school to purchase instruments to enable the school to purchase some hand chimes.  Groups of students can then be introduced to music making in a group, learning to read music, team work and the the enjoyment of creating a performance for others to appreciate.  I look forward to hearing the first group at the summer concert.

The Primary Music Concert

Winston musicians were able to visit St Johns Primary School on Thursday to perform to Years 3, 4, 5 and 6.
Our students were fantastic and all performed really well. Taking part were the Orchestra, Choir, Session Band, Keyboard Group, Percussion Group and Wind Quintet. The Y3-6 students from St John’s loved it and they are really keen to do more with us; first they will join us on our Year 6 Music Day and secondly they are going to come over and join in with our Summer Concert in July, with their school choir.

Sorry but sadly I have had to removed the pictures.

Thank you to Mr Drake, Mrs Davidson, Mrs Taylor and Mrs Roddan for organising and supporting this activity.

Music Recital

On the same day as the performance at St John's Primary School, Mr Drake also organised a recital for our GCSE and Year 9 students.  They each performed  a piece of their choice, therefore, we were able to experience a very diverse range of music.  It is clear that we have a number of very talented young people in our school, with some who write as well as perform their own compositions.  You will be able to hear the performances if you log onto Radio Woking via our school website at 6.00pm this weekend, when the recital will be broadcast. below are just a few of the students who took part in the evening.  Congratulations to everyone, it proved to be a most enjoyable event.

Working Together

Revision Evening

Approximately fifty families attended a revision evening run by the school through a company called Made.  The evening was both entertaining and informative and helped students to find revision strategies that would work for them.

Anti-bullying Assembly

All our Year groups participated in an Anti-bullying assembly this week, run by our ABC Committee. Students were asked to consider a series of questions and respond using the colour coded pages in the back of their planners.  This is just part of the work that our very active ABC Committee do on behalf of all students in the school.  Anyone can ask to join the ABC, aimed at providing peer to peer support.

Governors' Teaching & Learning Meeting

The Teaching and Learning Committee meeting took a different format on Tuesday evening.  The workshop style enabled governors to challenge staff on the work of the school and the impact iniatives have made to the experience of our students.  During the evening governors were able to discuss the use of data with Subject Leaders and Form Tutors, the developments in the science curriculum and the new systems introduced to track and monitor student progress.

Media Experience with Jon Snow

Soem of our Year 11 students attended a Media Studies GCSE Preparation Day at the BFI Southbank.
The day was a huge success. Not only were our 30 mixed ability students exceptionally well behaved and engaged, but they also volunteered, readily, to ask Jon Snow thoughtful and intelligent questions about the differences in television news style, news bias, how TV news appealed and targeted different audiences. Everyone was really impressed.
During the lectures from the other AQA presenter, they made notes diligently and got a tremendous amount out of the day.

The students below went up to represent our school during the workshop session; explaining what kind of news programme they would create and justifying their choices.

Welcome Year 6

Meeting Our New Students

On Thursday 12th March our new students were able to come into school for the first time, having received their offer of a place at Winston.  The evening consisted of a number of introductions, including the Year Leader, Deputy Year Leaders and members of our Academic Team, The Subject Leaders for English, Maths and Science.

Students and their parents then went up into our science block to meet with Year 7 and Year 10 students and some of our experienced Form Tutors.  They were able to ask questions and then experience some learning at Winston by participating in a mini lesson.

Parents were provided with a pack of information including a dedicated email address so that further questions can be asked and information shared.  Students are now have a specific part of our website to find out information about the school and participate in learning activities.

Enjoys the photographs below.
