Preparing to Join Winston

Visiting Our Year 6 Students

Within the last month Mrs Smith and her Induction Team, Mrs Harper, Mrs Taylor and Mrs Mellor, have been busy visiting primary schools, meeting the excited students who will be joining our community in September.  The Induction Team also included some of our current Year 7 students and several Senior Prefects to help answer any student questions and provide student reflections on life at Winston.

Mrs Stevens, Mrs Webb and Mrs Smith have extended the Transition Programme for selected group of students ,to help reduce anxieties and ensure a smooth transition from primary to The Winston Churchill School. These students received fantastic support from six of the current Year 7 students, who overcame their anxiety  last year and were an inspiration to the Year 6 students.

Mrs Smith & Mrs Taylor had a lovely day on Monday 13th  June, meeting the students who will be joining us as the only pupil from their primary school.  There was a real buzz about the place as students started to make friends, and meet the staff at Winston, in preparation for September.

The team are now busy preparing for Induction Days on Tuesday 28th and Wednesday 29th June.

Work at Winston

Your Invitation

Barista at Winston!

Meet the first cohort of students to work with Mrs Clark in our new coffee shop.  These students are developing the skills of coffee making and working towards their City & Guilds qualification.  The coffee and scones were delicious and served with care, as students learn the complexities of the equipment, coffee types and food service.

 Assemblies

Students have experienced several assemblies this week with themes that linked together.  First on the aspect of well-being and mental health, youth workers from CAMHs, Child and Adolescent Mental Health Services came in to talk to our students.  They explored the need for these services and how they can be accessed and the difference they make.

 The Road to Rio

Mr Weale and the new team of PE Prefects presented the second assembly theme based on challenge, motivation and not giving up.  I observed the assembly which took place in the gym, which was suitably decorated in preparation for the Olympic Games.  Students had researched and spoke about the mental and physical preparation necessary to compete at the highest level and how this translates into everyday life.  Well done for creating a very informative and thought provoking session.

EU Referendum

The Results are in...

Our students have been considering the arguments for remaining in or leaving the European Union.  There have been assemblies, debates during form time and discussions in lesson.  Finally students were asked to participate in a Winston vote on this issue.

The result from the student vote is as follows:

Remain - 63%

Leave - 37%

We will have to wait and see whether the nation votes the same way….

A huge thank you to Miss Lister and Mrs Finney for encouraging this debate and for providing a range of resources to inform our students.

Getting Involved

The EU Debate

Assemblies this week have been taken by our students and focussed on the EU debate and Referendum.  Both sides of the argument were explored and a BBC School Report interview, filmed earlier in the year by our students, was also included.  The interview was with Dr Simon Usherwood, Senior Lecturer of the School of Politics, University of Surrey.  This event is the lead into a vote which will involve all of our students next week, just before the country goes to the polls on this issue.  Thank you to Mrs Finney and Miss Lister for organising the activities and to tutors for encouraging robust debates during tutor time.

Supporting England and Wales!

Our students were given the opportunity to watch England play against Wales in the 2016 UEFA European Championship on the large screen in the Main Hall.  The atmosphere was tremendous as students from all year groups joined together to support our national side.

A Taste of A-Level

The maths department were visited by one of the maths teachers from Woking College to run a maths taster session for sets 1 & 2 in year 10.  The students all took part in a lesson that covered the topic of graphs and the famous ‘Seven Bridges of Konigsberg’ problem which form part of the Further Maths A-Level syllabus.  The students really enjoyed the opportunity to see what taking maths beyond Winston would look like and more students are now considering study maths at a higher level.

'Advanced Sport'

For the second week running a handful of students took part in a speed, agility and quickness session with 'Advanced Sport'. The students went through a handful of drills specifically designed to develop their first step quickness and their ability to change direction at speed. For the students it was an eye opener to training as an elite athlete and everyone left exhausted but smiling.

Big First Aid

Year 7 and 8 students, at Winston, took part in the Big First Aid lesson streamed live into classrooms at 2.00pm on Friday 17th June.  The lesson focussed on basic techniques that could be used by anyone, child or adult, when faced with a person in need of help.

Looking to The Future

Inset Day

Wednesday 15th June saw the final Inset Day of the academic year.  The focus, as is always the case, was on teaching and learning and the development of our learning competencies.  These competencies are the skills students require to become effective learners at Winston and beyond at post-16, university and the world of work.  This work is part of our development plan for the school, which sets targets for the new academic year.

New Student Entrance (and Exit)!

At last the new student entrance is finished and ready to open.  This is now the entrance that students will use if they are late to school or have to leave school during the day for an appointment.  Delays have been caused by a leaking roof, which took sometime to locate and resolve.  However, students will no longer have to wait at the main office to sign in or out for appointment, as Mrs Adams will be there to manage the new office.

Congratulations!

Daisy, Year 7, plays badminton at a good standard, representing Surrey in the U12 County Squad and playing for Swifts Junior Badminton Club, who are based in Lightwater.

During 2015/2016, Daisy has played in a team for Swifts which involved playing matches throughout the year against other teams in the Southern Region of the first ever Junior National Badminton League.  (there were 17 local leagues nationally).  The Surrey & District section was won by Swifts and so they went through to the national finals, which were held this weekend at the National Badminton Centre, Milton Keynes.  There were 6 regional finalists and they competed for the title over a 7 hour period on Saturday.  It was an incredible day of competitive sport and I am pleased to say that despite being the smallest team with only 5 players, Swifts were the winners of the first Badminton England National Junior League and lifted the trophy as national champions that evening.  Daisy has a gold medal and is still very excited about the result.

Supporting Winston

Great News!

Woking Borough Council have granted full planning permission for the Library and Planetarium.  We are now able to plan a timeline to ensure completion by the end of 2017, the 50th Anniversary of our school.  Fund raising is in full swing and we anticipate having the full costs within the timeframe of the project.

Together we will provide this outstanding facility for your children.
