Our Community

 Remembrance

Mr Williams and the Year 11 History Prefects planned and delivered a thought provoking session on Armistice Day.
Starting with the last post and some very poignant poetry students immediately had the opportunity to reflect on the sacrifice of so many individuals in so many conflicts.

As this year is the 100th anniversary of the Battle of the Somme, students were provided with a chance to consider the shocking statistics of the number of lives lost and the to consider the symbolism of the poppy.  Students were faced with the dilemma confronting the world of football and asked what they thought about the FA's decision to ban the wearing of poppies on arm bands.

Students and staff from Winston took part in the Woking Remembrance Parade and wreath laying on Sunday.  Thank you to everyone who took part.

Year 10 Languages at Work event at Wellington College

Recently 7 of Winston's finest Year 10 Linguists were invited to attend a day of language events at Wellington College.  The students took part in 5 different workshops, each with its own focus but common theme of the importance of language skills in various workplaces.  Some of the tasks the students were involved in focused on understanding the difference between translation and transcreation in the marketing world, designing slogans and taglines for adverts, using language skills to describe pictures as well as learning some Arabic and Japanese.  The students had a brilliant time and we were very grateful to the partnership for inviting us once again.

Year 9 Visit to Barnsbury Primary School

Winston has been working on developing stronger MFL links with the Primary schools in the area and recently 10 of our most able Year 9 German students were invited to work with Miss Allen on the delivery of a German lesson for Year 6 students at Barnsbury school.  The theme for the lesson was to talk about foods that the students liked and disliked eating.  The Year 9 students were exceptional in their classroom leadership, each having the confidence to work and coach a small group of 3-4 students in various tasks.  The students were a true credit to the school and the Year 6 students responded really well to them.  We look forward to repeating this success again in the coming year and thank the staff at Barnsbury for allowing us to visit.

MFL Choir

Every Wednesday from 3-3:45pm the MFL choir meets in Miss Allen's classroom (ML3) to sing various songs in French and German.  Last half term they worked on 'Komm gib mir deine Hand' (I wanna hold your hand) by the Beatles as well as tongue twisters to improve pronunciation.  This half term sees preparation for Christmas with various carols, such as 'mon beau sapin' (O Christmas tree) and Rudolph das kleine Rentier (Rudolph the red nosed reindeer) amongst others.  Year 7 students are getting their competency booklets signed each week and have shown great dedication to the choir.  Every Year 7 class will also be practising some of these carols in their French and German lessons and students should watch out for the inter-class competition - more details to follow in class!

This Week

Impressive Performance

Jayden was awarded with a £15 voucher for his dedication to Barista in our new coffee shop by Mrs Clark, our Barista Tutor.  He has helped out both in the Summer Holidays, Summer School, and at Careers Fair, where he not only worked all through the school day, but stepped in and helped out after school when another student was unable to.

Joel on the Radio

Year 7 student, Joel, planned and carried out an interview with Woking player Charlie Carter, for his Radio Woking show.
Joel's show, a mixture of music and football, goes out on air on a Friday between 3.oopm and 4.00pm.  There will be a number of interviews over the coming months.

Music Technology Club

'You will find Music Tech Club down in Music room 1, every Friday, after school. There are a number of students currently working on our first project, which is to create a music backing track for a chosen trailer. The students we have working on this project range from years 7 to Years 9. These are the types of skills currently being developed by our Year 10 V-Cert Group. We still have some places and it's not too late if you would like to join Music Tech Club. We will shortly be moving onto a new project, looking at how music has an impact on what we see. Changing the music style to show how it affects the meaning and mood of what you are watching.

I am very impressed with the outcome of all the students doing the Music Tech Club, and they clearly enjoy working with friends, working on the new Macs and learning a new skill.'

Year 7 Boys and Girls District Basketball

This week our year 7 basketball teams rolled out in their first district wide basketball tournaments at Woking High. The boys A team finished an impressive 3rd with star man Liam Marsh stealing the show. The boys B team finished a very respectable 5th position up against 10 teams.

The girls only entered 1 team but it was all needed as they remained unbeaten and romped to victory scoring 27 baskets on their way to winning the tournament.  Star player Katie Newman led from the front and put in a huge performance.
A huge well done to all the players and lets look forward to more success moving forward.

New Carpet!

At last the new carpet arrived and was fitted over the weekend.  It looks great and the same pattern will also replace the water damaged carpet in the Churchill Suite.

PTA Boot Sale

Thank you to all the members of the PTA for arranging another highly successful Boot Sale.  There was a maximum number of sellers and plenty of customers looking for a bargain!

Why not join in on Sunday 4th December?

Sports Awards Evening

Sports College

Sports Awards Evening

Another fabulous evening celebrating the success of our sports men and women from across the whole school.  We were delighted that Kristian Thomas, GB Olympian, was with us throughout the day and stayed in the evening to present the awards.  Over 85 awards were made and there was the opportunity to enjoy the stories of training and competition, of teams and individuals and to highlight the importance of participation. A huge thank you to the PE Department for all the work they do throughout the year and to Mr Weale for arranging such a great evening.
