 Japanese learners.

Carmen and Ethan with a stunning piece of origami they made during the club.

A group photo of the members of Japanese club (from all year groups) with an ongoing collaborative project of theirs. They have currently made over 350 origami paper cranes and aim to make 1000, inspired by the story of Sadako Sasaki.

Sadako Sasaki (佐々木 禎子 Sasaki Sadako?, January 7, 1943 – October 25, 1955) was a Japanese girl who was two years old when an American atomic bomb was dropped on Hiroshima on August 6, 1945, near her home next to the Misasa Bridge. Sadako became one of the most widely known hibakusha — a Japanese term meaning "bomb-affected person". She is remembered through the story of the one thousand origami cranes she folded before her death, and is to this day a symbol of the innocent victims of nuclear warfare.  Ref: Wikipedia

Year 7 at the Pantomime.

On Tuesday 14th December 45 year 7 students were invited to the Xmas Pantomime, Snow White, at Woking Theatre.  They were all in high spirits and joined in with the singing, dancing and booing and were, possibly, the loudest group in the Theatre!  The evening ended with a ‘shout out’ to Winston which added that extra personal touch.

Re-inventing Christmas Dinner

9WG were tasked with re-inventing some components of a traditional Christmas dinner.  They worked collaboratively to come up with ideas for making sprouts, sausages, parsnips and potatoes more interesting and creative.  They got started straight away and dived into recipe books and compared how they serve these ingredients at home.

Mrs Ballam was so proud of how they approached the challenge and of the final results.  Well done 9WG!

Christmas at Winston

German Biscuit Making

Year 7 students were invited to make traditional German biscuits but first they had to first translate the ingredients and quantities before working out the method from the German recipe.
Our German Foreign Language Assistant, Dominik and Year 11 German Prefect, Rebecca Kennedy, were on hand to help out.
Well done to all who took part and congratulations to Victoria Peers who was the overall winner of this festive German biscuit bake off.

Year 10 Design Technology

Year 10 students hard at work, creating their bookends designs, which have been inspired by childrens' story books.  The class have been working on a carousel system either sanding and shaping their uprights, then gluing their since September. In this GCSE project the students learn different designing, drawing and manufacturing techniques. There are plastics elements to this project, which the students designed on 2D design and cut on the laser cutter, as well as painting their shaped and sanded uprights.

Oxford Presentation

On Thursday 24th November, 46 year 10 students enjoyed a presentation from Ms Hannah Rolley, from St Hilda's college, Oxford. She outlined the process of university application (not just for Oxford) and highlighted the need to demonstrate interests and hobbies as well as academic success, when competing for places in college. She outlined the costs of university education and the loan system, ensuring students understood that, no matter what the financial circumstances, if determined, there was always a way to survive the expense.

The particularly exciting section was what life was like at Oxford! There was a strong message of academic excellence (of course) but also on balance and so it was clear that time was set aside for leisure, from all the sports and music clubs to even the well- established chocolate club!

We are in the process of arranging more sessions like this and the next one, will be for year 9! Watch this space.
