Drama News!

Two Exciting Developments

Playwriting Programme

New Views is the National Theatre’s annual playwriting programme for 14 - 19 year olds.

Every year, hundreds of students from across the UK learn about playwriting from some of the finest writers in the industry and write their own 30-minute plays. One play will then be selected to be produced at the NT with a professional cast and crew, alongside rehearsed readings of the shortlisted plays.

Thank you very much for applying to take part in New Views 2017/2018.

We would like to confirm that you have been allocated a place on the project and look forward to working with you over the next academic year

There are only 70 schools nationally who are chosen for this project.

Mr Donaldson has asked both Mr Penfold and Mr Harrington-Tucker to lead this new initiative and they have both happily agreed.

Competitive!

Winston Young Musician

On Tuesday 18th July we enjoyed an evening of music from our most talented young musicians.  Each student had the opportunity to demonstrate their skills with two pieces of contrasting music.  The quality was exceptional and the judges debated long and hard before awarding the prize to Bachir Rezagui, with second place going to Sam Rawson.
Congratulations to everyone who took part!

Maths Interform 2017

Throughout this week Key Stage 3 have been taking part in exciting Maths Interform competitions.  Each year group took part in three Maths challenges including a problem solving relay, a cryptic Cross Word and a super tricky Sudoku.  In each round the students scored points for their forms and they scored bonus points for completing the challenges the quickest!  The competitions have been really close all week with some fantastic maths skills on show. Well done to all students who took part.

Wakeboarding

We took twelve Young Carers to JB Water Sports yesterday to learn wakeboarding. It was a fun exciting afternoon introducing students to a new skill. The group started with  a training session to gain the  skills and technique required to master the main cable. Every student had great fun falling off the boards and some were naturals. One of the students was so good she gained experience water-skiing.  It was lovely to see the group encouraging each other and working together in this new experience.

After Class!

After Class

We celebrated the 50th Anniversary of the school with a brand new musical, 'After Class'.  Written and directed by Mr Jolly and Mr Parsons, it was a brilliant piece of theatre that took place in a school! The audience loved the jokes and were impressed by the talent of the cast and crew.  The Tech Team and the Stage Hands were outstanding, as was the cast, who acted, sung and danced their way through musical; all accompanied by a great Pit Band of current and ex students, as well as staff.

It was also a very emotional final night, as it was the last time that Mr Jolly will work with our students, as he is moving onto a new school and a new country.  We wish him every success; he has made a huge difference to the students and the staff at Winston, we will all miss him.

Well done to everyone for a great show!

Love Learning

Sharing our Love of Language Learning

On Monday 10th July, Miss Retzepter organised for 18 Year 8 linguists to go to Hermitage Primary School ,to teach a French lesson to each of their Year 5 classes.  The theme was 'places to go in town' and students spent time learning the vocabulary and playing games with the Year 8 tutors to practise this.  They then listened to a funny, catchy French song to learn the verb 'aller' (to go) and then worked on whiteboards to create sentences.  Finally students played a game of battleships to further consolidate their learning.  The experience was thoroughly enjoyed by all and we very much enjoyed working with one of our main feeder Primary schools by delivering a taster Secondary School lesson.  The Year 8 students were excellent representatives for the school and our thanks goes to all staff and students at the Hermitage School for welcoming us for the morning.  We hope to be back in the new school year!

Year 9 on Time!

Enjoy the pictures of some fantastic Year 9 clocks, which they have finished since starting their GCSE Design Technology course in May. The clocks have been inspired by the theme ‘around the world’ and as you can see each student has taken a different spin on this idea to create a unique and interesting design.

Work is by: Megan Edwards, Ben Jordan, Saif Hasan, Blaine Cutmore, Ewan Howell and Harrison Dunne.

Year 10 in the 6th Form!

On Thursday 13th July our Year 10 cohort visited Woking College for a taste of post 16 education. Students had opportunity to sample a range of A level and vocational courses including Law, Photography, Psychology, Graphic Design and Applied Science. The day gave great food for thought and has helped many students sharpen their focus on their direction in post 16 pathways.
Staff from Woking college observed that our students “were a credit to Winston…our teachers  all commented  on what a great group they all were” and former Winston student Dan Swords, now president of the Woking College student council, also wrote that “feedback from college staff is exceptional and they were all very happy with how well the students conducted themselves.”
Well done Year 10!
