This Week

Assembly

Our assemblies this week have been led by Mrs Sigrist and Mrs Mellor.  Students were asked to reflect on their futures and not wasting the life that they have. The Steve Job's speech 'Stay Hungry, Stay Foolish' was shown.  The message was fill your life with something worthwhile; you need to love what you do to be successful.

With this in mind it was then appropriate to introduce this year's Careers Day to each year group.

Our Careers Fair takes place on Wednesday 18th October.  We are delighted that so many companies and colleges have agreed to support this event.  All of our students will have the opportunity to investigate pathways through further education, university and a range of careers.

Bread & Butter Pudding!

Year 8 Grammar Group (8WG JVA) were set the task of creating a recipe for Bread & Butter Pudding that Winston Churchill Year 7 students could follow. In the first lesson they all needed to take into account time constraints, volume of liquid and ingredients in relation to the foil container that had to be used .Within the second lesson the students made the Bread & Butter Pudding / reviewed the practical results.

The outcomes filled the corridors with the aroma associated cinnamon, nutmeg and Christmas! This British dessert will enable students to see how basic home ingredients can be transformed into a delicious dish. After the practical the class discussed possible areas that Year 7’s may need to be reminded of, steps they need to make sure were in place for a successful outcome.

The students also had to write up the recipe (as part of their homework) in a way that they felt best met the needs of a Year 7 group. They all produced a variety of styles in terms of presentation and content. Teachers within the Food Technology Department will now decide on one recipe which will form part of the Year 7 recipe sheets. A prize will be awarded that incorporates a range of cooking equipment.

Catering Academy

We were delighted to host an event for our catering provider on Thursday evening.  On show was some of the ideas for new menus and some great recipes for the Christmas season.  I had the opportunity to taste some of the items and I know that our students are going to enjoy these tasty meals.  My favourite was the different types of mash potato with a variety of toppings and everyone loved the fish finger wraps with new flavoured mayonnaise.

Join Us!

We Need Your Help!

The PTA has just purchased fifteen Apple Macs for the new library but we need fifteen more. We have to have a committee of at least twelve, to ensure that we can continue as a charity, including being able to apply for gift aid.

It is a very small commitment for a significant impact on your child's school.

Please help us to support your child.

Working Together

Year 7 Maths

Year 7 are learning the Winston Way in their maths lessons.  They have the opportunity to collaborate, as they problem solve, using the white boards that have been installed for this purpose.  Our experience is that students gain more confidence through this method and enjoy trying out ways of solving the challenging tasks set by the teachers.

Year 10 Film Studio Visit

Year 10 had a very successful educational visit to the Warner Brothers Studios.  The day began with a ‘Script to screen’ workshop where students learned about the roles within the industry.  Students also discovered the great job opportunities available now that many more films are being made in England.  We looked at the importance of costume design, model work and special effects.  Students also had hands on experience at flying broomsticks and turning into giants thanks to green screens and forced perspective.

Macmillan Coffee Morning

The staff enjoyed a great range of cakes to have with their coffee during break, to help raise fund for the Macmillan Charity, a very worthwhile cause, that sadly has touched many of the families connected with the school.

Year 11 are also fund raising for our chosen charity, The Woking Hospice, by walking the distance between Winston and the North Pole, please support their tremendous endeavour.

Fire Drill

Students experienced a double fire drill, to help to ensure our readiness  in the event of a real incident.  Having established that we could evacuate the building in three minutes, once the students had returned to their lessons, the bells rang again but this time a staircase was blocked off , simulating just one possible scenario.  The students were brilliant and found an alternative route through to the back staircase and we completed a second evacuation successfully.

Open Evening

Welcome Year 6

On Thursday 28th September, having only been in the school for just under four weeks, Year 7 proved to be amazing tour guides for our visitors to Open Evening. Their confidence and enthusiasm shone and they received a large number of compliments from parents.  Approximately four hundred students, from across all year groups, made a significant contribution to our evening, supporting departments. Some were teaching, others helping with directions and there were performances, as well as presentations.

A huge thank you to everyone involved, for making our guests feel so welcome and for enabling the Year 6 parents to find out about Winston, as they make the important decision of a choice of secondary school for their child.  Thank you to our staff team, who demonstrate on a daily basis their passion and commitment to the children in our care.  I would also like to thank Eddie, Maisie, Grace and Joel for their excellent presentation.

I hope you enjoy the images below:
