BBC School Report

Winston's BBC School Report

Winston students turned into reporters to take part in BBC School Report.  They planned their approach and identified key areas of interest and then set about researching and organising interviews. The areas covered were wide ranging and students clearly felt passionate about their investigations. Click on the link to see the amazing work completed by our students.

The Winston PE Reporters were delighted to welcome Amy Allcock back to Winston.  Amy is a highly successful British athlete who attended The Winston Churchill School.  You can see the report on our BBC School Report website.  Thank you to Amy for taking the time to come into school it was appreciated.

Polly, from Year 8, did a fantastic job in representing the school on BBC Surrey radio’s ‘Drive at Five’ show at around 5.50pm yesterday. She spoke very eloquently about her experiences of School Report and the relevance of Latin in today’s world!

This Week at Winston

Girls' Rugby

On Tuesday 13th March, England international and Harlequins player, Leanne Riley visited The Winston Churchill School.  She was in for four PE lessons with the year 7 and 8 girls to inspire students to play rugby.  The students developed ball handling skills, fast footwork, spatial awareness and were encouraged to work as a team the whole way through.  Several of the girls came away from the sessions with a new found love of rugby. Leanne gave the students leaflets for a girls rugby camp taking place at Chobham Rugby Club on 9th/10th April, and we hope to see many of them signing up for it (for more information, please speak to Miss Singleton)! It was great to see many of the girls trying something new, big thank to the Lioness Rugby Academy, and Leanne for providing such fun sessions!!

Good luck to Leanne, who is playing for England against Ireland this Friday at 5.30 in the six nations!

Teaching Others

Jay is a talented , confident and competent young year 7 students. He delivered a practical lesson to his fellow year 7 students in 7W8.
Jay dictated his recipe as the class took notes on the making of mini documents. The lesson was not about Health Eating ( although there was no frying taking place)  but the use of commercially available electrical machinery, as well as the communication skills shown throughout the demonstration. Each student was given the opportunity to taste a light and vanilla flavoured mini donuts.

Jay is a natural when it comes to delivering a practical lesson .

Where is the Library?

Nearly There!

Students have recently become very interested in the new library that we are building, attached to the English Block.  The scaffolding has come down and the shape and structure of the new block can be seen.  The new glazing is being installed, giving an intriguing glimpse into the new space.

Inside progress has been rapid.  The ceilings are almost complete, the staircase is in and the planetarium has been constructed.  The images below will provide some insight to our new facility.  The new library furniture is being installed on 19th April.

Music at Winston

The Band of the Royal Logistics Corps

at Winston!

We were delighted to welcome the The Band of the Royal Logistics Corps to Winston on Friday 9th March.  Students had a full day of workshops and performances.  They were coached and supported by members of the band and had a careers talk to make them aware of the opportunities that await, should they wish to pursue a career in music. The students all had a brilliant day.
We all enjoyed the joint concert staged at the end of the day and were immensely proud of our students, as they performed alongside the band members.  Thank you to everyone involved in making this a very special day at Winston.

Success at Winston

DISTRICT CHAMPIONS

Our Y10 Netball girls became DISTRICT CHAMPIONS last night at the end of season district tournament.  They netted over 50 goals in six 7 minute games! It would be hard to pick a player of the tournament, they were all fantastic and worked hard for one another! Well done girls, your commitment to training, and school netball has paid off! Well deserved winners!  They now progress on to the county finals, where I wish them every success.

Hannah Scrivener, Lily Zimmerman, Lois Henley, Ellie Gunner-Hooper, Kayla Vine, Alissa Mailes, Tara Saunders, Megan Best.

Latin Reading Success

Congratulations to Freddie and Poly who placed second out of twelve pairs in the Beginners Latin Dialogue at this year’s Latin Reading Competition organised by the Guildford Classical Association. They were commended for their excellent pronunciation and expressive delivery.

World Book Day – 1st of March 2018

Keeping with tradition this year The Winston marked World Book Day with a celebration of reading in the LRC.

Thank you to staff for supporting World Book Day by dressing as their favourite literary character and a big thank you to students who supported the event making it a wonderful, whimsical World Book Day!

Breakfast Revision

Mr Johnson ran a breakfast revision session for Year 11 parents and students. Twelve parents and eleven students attended.

We looked at the exam structure, the importance of correct equipment, time management, grade boundaries, the value of each mark, and worked through 6 past paper questions using the official mark scheme to guide students as to how to get the full marks being awarded. But ultimately, the emphasis was on how parents can support their child, and ultimately school.

Overall, a successful morning session, and Mr Johnson will organise another session for a different group of students after Easter.

Great Half Term

Music Technology

I have attached some photos of my Year 11 VCert Music Technology students experimenting with Foley (using everyday objects to create the sounds for visual media ie: footsteps or ). They are working on unit 4 of the VCert which is all about sound creation and have been tasked with creating the entire soundtrack for a short wildlife video. As well as Foley, they will be experimenting with sound manipulation (using the iMacs), sampling and creating underscores.

The Wheeler Programme at Wellington

Good news; Jayden Jackson in Year 9 has been excepted onto the Wheeler Programme at Wellington Programme.

The Wheeler Programme is a funded education programme to complement and support existing school provision. This innovative programme brings together the experience of the current Independent/State School Partnership together with Wellington College and other strategic partners to provide regular academic enrichment, mentoring and support over a five year period to groups of students attending non-selective maintained schools specifically to encourage ambitious aspirations for the future.  Each year as the students go through the programme they will experience support and assistance particular to their needs through a combination of a yearly residential course, additional workshops and mentoring.

Well Done Jayden!
