Winning the Winston Way

⚽⚽ Well Done Winston ⚽⚽

On what was a difficult day for staff and students alike the year 11 boys travelled to The Weald School in Billingshurst early on Wednesday 12th October.
Leaving school at 9:30 for a 11am kick off we had around 10 mins for a quick warm up when we arrived and to get our minds on playing a game of football. It was a fairly even start to the game but the home team started to take control and took the lead mid way through the first half with a good finish from close range which goalkeeper Kristian Stribling could do nothing about.
The boys picked themselves up and immediately worked their way forward to create a couple of long range chances, Latham Roberts, Toby Brown, Callum Davies and Harrison Wood putting the pressure on high up the pitch. However, one long ball over the top from their centre back and their quick striker got in behind only to be brought down and make it 2-0 from the penalty spot.
Half time teamtalk was about not letting them get too much time on the ball and pressing them all over the pitch in the second half.

The boys were superb in the second half and deserved got a goal back from a brilliant curling free kick from Josh Caulfield, straight into the top corner. Then 5 mins later it was 2-2 as Latham struck from close range giving the keeper no chance. And with 25 mins remaining the comeback was complete when Latham got in down the left and got in front of the defender brilliantly before being brought down. Josh stepped up and dispatched the penalty. In the last 20 mins the defensive 4 were superb in not giving them anything and seeing out a superb win and comeback! Special mentions to Josh C, Jack P and Harrison W for some brilliant battling performances! Now onto the next round!

Great Work Year 8

 In the News

This is a newspaper that 8CN have made about the news from the last couple of weeks. It's a follow up to our discursive writing unit where they wrote newspaper articles about the pros and cons of social media; I wanted to give them an opportunity to understand the challenges they might face if they were real journalists.
The class chose their own topics to write about, as well as an editing and layout team who put it all together with only a little tweaking from me to fix the presentation. They're quite proud and worked hard on it!

Feeling Success

 A 9-0 Win for Winston!

Yesterday afternoon our U14 Winston Squad took to the field, for their first game of the season. The game was against Christs School, Richmond, our first round of the County Cup. The pressure was on, the whistle blew, and the game got off to a strong start.
Within the first 15 minutes Winston were 4-0 up. With three out of four goals scored by our team: Charlotte, Lucy and Chloe. Unfortunately for Christs, Ava crossed a strong ball into the box and on a defensive rebound, the opposition scored an own goal, assisted by Ava P!
As the end of the second half was approaching, Ava scored a fantastic goal in the top right corner, bringing the score to 5-0.
The second half saw a change in the line-up, as Eda took to the field. Giving Lisen a well-deserved break, after her fantastic performance up-front. With the second half in full swing, Christs School came in at full attack. However, with some tireless defending from Winston, Ava gets her second goal, bringing the score to 6-0. Soon to be followed by Charlotte  who gets her second, the score is now at 7-0.
Christs come back in attack with some attempts at goal, but Jenny, Suri and Izzy were too quick on the ball, keeping it out of the danger zone.
With a quick substitution Winston welcome Imaan and Amelia to the pitch, who quickly get stuck in. Imaan in defence and Amelia in midfield, Ava with a run from the wing, drives the ball into the oppositions goal scoring her third, a hat trick, 8-0!

A brilliant goal from Lucy Fuller, nearing the end of the second half takes the score to 9-0! The final whistle blew, the final result, 9-0! Well done, Winston! A fantastic game played and thanks to Christs School, for a brilliant game from the get-go and coming out to play!

A fantastic way to start the season!

Yr7 Gardening Project

A small group of Yr7's recently had the opportunity to spend a day at The Vyne Centre in Knaphill. Here the students were able to volunteer within their local community to help improve the outdoor space available at the centre.
Tasks involved weeding, planting bulbs & flowers, completing the construction of bug hotels and flattening pathways suitable for wheelchair use. The group were fully engaged, getting their hands dirty and making a positive difference. Upon completion, we discussed the value of volunteering and team work as well as the vital life skills that they were developing.

It was also great to see members of the public inside the Community Centre talk to our students and thank them for their hard work. The group are keen to visit again to see the outcome of their work in the Spring!

Art Club

In Art club this week students continued exploring the theme of Gargoyles. Some students had fun creating a Monoprint. This is a one-off fine art printing technique that traditionally uses a sheet of glass or Perspex to transfer a unique design onto a sheet of paper. No two monoprints are alike, and the designs created can only be used once.
Some other students chose to make their own Art, popular styles range from comic book doodles, Japanese Manga,  super realistic drawing and painting.

Great to See You

 Open Evening

I was delighted to welcome so many parents to our Open Evening on Thursday 29th September. Our students and staff were keen to show parents our school and the work that we do in each area.

Our Year 6 visitors were also the first people to experience our new facility, Performance Space.  Although there is still a small amount of work to complete, the contractor enabled us to be able to use it for the evening event.

Parents and their children were so impressed and the words 'warm, welcoming, impressive, exciting, clean, amazing, professional, inspiring' were being used by parents as they left.  The parents also recognised the level of investment that we have put into our school, creating modern, exciting learning spaces.

Thank you to our whole staff team and to all of our students for helping to create a great evening and for helping Year 6 to make to make the decision about their next school.
