Mr Gove at Winston

 Period 5 on Friday Afternoon

The Rt Hon Michael Gove, the Conservative MP for Surrey Heath, visited Winston, discussing a range of issues impacting on schools.  Topics ranged from funding and Winston's ability to raise funds to invest in such great facilities, to the issues around vaping and the impact on the health of students.

We toured the school, including the Maths and History Departments.  Year 8 were in the planetarium with Mr Bacon and this was an opportunity to demonstrate a resource that no other state school in the country offers to it's students to enhance learning.

The Drama Department were rehearsing Hamilton in the main hall in preparation for Open Evening, which was impressive.  Then we went on into Performance Space where Mr Drake and the orchestra were performing to Year 7 students to encourage them to learn an instrument.

Year 7 at Winston

Year 7 Have Found Their Feet!!

Year 7 are proving to be an outstanding cohort of young people.  They find their way around independently, engage with learning and enjoy their lunch break, with great food and time to socialise.

Here are a few images of students preparing for assembly and in lessons!

Live in Woking

The Manhattan Project: Live @ HMV Woking

On Thursday 7th September a group of Winston students had their public debut performance at HMV Woking as The Manhattan Project. The Manhattan Project is made up of Y11 students with Joel as the lead singer/guitarist, Sam on lead/rhythm guitar, Harry on bass and Abi on drums/backing vocals. They have a classic Britpop sound along the likes of Oasis and Blur. The band performed 7 songs, 6 of which were originals with just 1 cover song. Joel did a superb job of fronting the band and was hardly phased when a string snapped, and he needed to change the string mid set! His response to the audience was ‘Sorry for the wait but I can’t choose when a string decides to snap!’. There was a lively crowd watching them, made up of friends, family and the general public, all who cheered loudly in appreciation after each song. It was so fantastic to see a talented group of Winston students, who had booked and organised the gig themselves, performing outside of school. We look forward to seeing them perform in our Band Night at the end of November.
