Acids and Alkalis

 Year 7 Science: Rainbow Fizz

The Year 7 students are all studying an enquiry cycle 'How Dangerous are Acids and Alkalis.'
Miss Jackson's students incorporated standard lab practice - familiarising themselves with and using various science equipment - with creating a 'rainbow fizz' which reinforced their learning of the pH scale.

Firstly, they clamped a boiling tube in the clamp at an angle, pointing it away from their faces.
They poured in 2cm depth of 0.5M Hydrochloric Acid.

Next they added a few drops of Universal Indicator solution and watched it turn red to show acid.
Skill and precision were required to carefully add just a few drops of saturated sodium carbonate solution with a pipette; too much and it wouldn't work.

The mixture gave a satisfying fizz and the sodium carbonate (an alkali) turned dark blue and sank to the bottom and a rainbow gradually appeared in the solution.

Year 10 Cardiovascular System

Year 10 GCSE PE Lessons

This term, Year 10 GCSE PE have been exploring the cardiovascular system in relation to movement and performance. We have looked at the topic in a variety of different ways in order to understand how the blood transportation system works. This has culminated into a visual revision resource that the students to can use ahead of their end of unit topic test.

Well done Year 10 - great start to the year!

Open Evening 2026

Opening Our School to Year 6

I was delighted to welcome so many children and parents to our Open Evening.  It was great to hear the positive feedback and comments about our  students, staff and our facilities.

There was so much to see and do and parents and students asked some very interesting questions.

Parents talked about our enthusiastic staff, helpful students and amazing facilities, including the development of two new science labs.

Over 500 Winston students volunteered to spend their evening taking children and their parents around the school, whilst others were supporting departments and demonstrating their skills.

Our Head students interviewed Year 9 students during my presentation and  we were also impressed by Leen, Zain and Avanthika's confidence as they engaged Mellina, Ethan and Lucy about their experiences at Winston.

It is also so important to come to Winston on a working day to see the experience a child has in our lessons and experience a change over.  1500 children all moving across the school into a different lesson!

A huge thank you to every member of staff, as everyone contributed to making the evening such a success.
