Winston at King's College
'On Monday 26th Year 10 GCSE Latin students were invited to attend a lecture by classicist Tom Holland on contemporary misconceptions of Ancient World religions at King's College University. We enjoyed an interesting insight historical contexts of ancient Greek and Roman culture which will support our reading later on in the GCSE Latin course, in what was for many of us our first experience in a university style lecture.
One of the most interesting things we learned the notion of 'cyclum', the idea that a story lasts the cycle of living memory until it is lost forever.'
The lecture was hosted by Classics for All, a charity that supports Classics teaching in state schools across the country, and continues to support Winston as we broaden and strengthen the Latin curriculum offered to students at KS3 & 4. Mr Fisher and Hashir Ashraf spoke to patrons about the support that the school has received and the value that our students place on the learning of Latin and the Classics.

Coffee Art
Students preparing for their Barista Coffee qualifications, enjoyed a session on coffee art, the results of which you can see below.
Widening Participation Programme
As part of their Widening Participation Programme, the University of Surrey were invited to Winston Churchill School to deliver a Science workshop that focused on DNA to a selection of Year 9 students.
The workshop involved learning about the structure of DNA, where it is found and how it might become damaged. Students then had the opportunity to get hands on and practically extract DNA from a strawberry using a method provided to them. To finish, students then got to compare how genetically similar they are to other living organisms and how statistics could be misleading.
It was a great introduction to DNA, which all Year 9’s are currently learning about in their Biology lessons. It also provided them with an insight into Biosciences and the career options that can lead on from it.
