Looking into the Future

Thinking About our Future
Careers Day

Our students were provided with a superb opportunity to explore a range of further education establishments, possible training routes and careers at our extensive Careers Fair on Wednesday.
The students spent time during their tutorial sessions preparing, so that they were able to make the most of the opportunity, including having lessons on how to ask effective questions.

The exhibitors were incredibly impressed with our students:

'It was an absolute pleasure to be involved and your polite students are a real credit to you!'

'The provision of tea, biscuits and lunch was amazing, as was the trip to the planetarium!'

'Ambassadors were fab; they looked after us very well and the planetarium talk was ace!
Thank you for a great day!'

'Students were polite and asked some excellent questions; they showed a real interest in our world!'

'Very well organised, polite students who asked relevant questions and engaged well in conversations!'

'All students were very polite - a great school!'

'Perfect from start to finish! Students were so polite!! They even challenged us on why we chose our career.'

'The students were lovely, very charming.'

"The quality of the questioning from year 9,  was of a better standard than some of the 2nd year students' I met, at a recent university visit!"

Band Showcase

The Band Showcase took place on Tuesday 12th November 2019, giving students the opportunity to perform in self selecting groups.  It made for a very enjoyable 45 minutes of music.  Some of the students were demonstrating their skills on several instruments, having decided to learn how to play a second or even a third one!

Rugby Fever

Our school was kindly invited to the 'Celebration of Rugby' Festival at Staines RFC last week. This event was organised by Harlequins RFC's Foundation team who work to inspire, educate and equip young people through the power of sport, and also to drive positive change following the success of the Rugby World Cup in Japan.

They had 400+ in attendance from across the London boroughs, both girls and boys from U10s through to U15s. The day was jam-packed with games where core values of teamwork, respect and resilience were tightly embedded.

I was very proud to take 3 very strong teams to participate in this tournament, along with one of our Y11 Sports Captains, Evie, who was identified by Harlequins RFC for her umpiring and leadership skills and was selected to be one of their Young Referees across several matches throughout the festival.

Out of an accumulative total of 20 matches played by our U13 girls, U15 girls and U15 boys, we only conceded 3 games. Sheer grit and team determination led the way for their success. We even caught the eye of the 3 International Fijian rugby stars who had just returned from the World Cup and were keen to see our homegrown talent on display. From impressive leadership from Bo, to the skills of 'The Windmill' Ella, to the morale and analytical motivation from Will, I was not the only one who was extremely proud of each student and how they conducted themselves - The Harlequins RFC squad tweeted the following from their social media account after the tournament - "Your pupils were a credit to each other, their parents and The Winston Churchill School. Some fantastic 'Beat the Game' ideas on show too" #PROUD!

Sports Awards

Sports Awards Evening

Before half term we were very lucky to have another Team GB Olympic & World Championship medalist come to Winston to help deliver our annual Sports Awards Evening. This year it was the 800m and 4x400m relay runner, Marilyn Okoro.

The evening celebrated a fantastic year of sporting contribution and achievements from our dedicated students. The award categories included Coach’s Player and Most Dedicated at both Key Stage 3 and Key Stage 4 across each sporting discipline. Winston dancers and musicians were on hand to demonstrate their talents during the ceremony too and we also welcomed some familiar faces from last year’s leavers who were able to join us. It was a great evening to reflect on a busy year. The year included so many opportunities for student growth, pushing boundaries, commitment and engagement to sport, which in turn fuelled a positive learning environment where all students of all abilities have been able to flourish in the department.

Marilyn helped to present the awards to the winners before delivering an inspirational message to close the night. She was able to share her own personal story of how she grew up determined to succeed as an athlete despite the lack of ambition within her neighbourhood in London. Students, staff and parents came away from her speech feeling inspired and ready to implement Marilyn’s motto of “dream big and never give up”.

We look forward to celebrating the effort and achievements of our students again in 2020.

Winston Remembers

11th November 2019

The whole school gathered on the patio to pay our respects to those who paid the ultimate sacrifice during the wars in which our service men and women have fought.

Students played the Last Post and this was followed by two minutes of silence.  I was immensely proud as the whole school observed this tradition with respect, taking the opportunity to reflect.

The Last Post was played by Taran Guild, Jono Packett, Liv Laurent and Casey Adams,
led by Mr Drake.

Our Library

Our Library; a Hub of Learning

Miss Dodd, our Discovery Space Manager, thought that you might like to see how busy the library is this afternoon - we have chess and board games club, book club and lots of other students busy doing independent work! Some Year 11 students have also enjoyed playing chess! Soon Miss Dodd will be putting out puzzles and other board games at lunchtimes. It really has been a hub of independent learning which is fantastic.

Our Memorial Garden

Mrs Pinion's Art Club have been making poppies on acetate.  These have now been hung on the tree in the middle of our memorial garden.  We are also fortunate to have a beautiful hand made trough presented to the school, which is currently holding some poppies.

Thank you to everyone involved in making this a special place for reflection and remembrance.

Reminder Careers Day

Students will all have the opportunity to experience our Careers Fair on Wednesday 13th November.  They have been preparing for this  during tutorials.  is is the perfect opportunity to find out first hand about the world of work and the demands of some business sectors.

Always Learning!

Languages at Work – Wellington College

On Wednesday 23rd October, 14 of our keenest Year 10 linguists travelled to Wellington College to take part in the annual Languages at Work Event with other local schools including Gordons, Tomlinscote and Collingwood.  After posing for the compulsory photograph under the clock tower, we went to the welcome talk in the grand hall and were then split into groups.

Students spent the day attending a carousel of sessions learning about how languages will be important in their working lives. Highlights included learning to introduce ourselves in Japanese including saying a greeting, giving your name, nationality, occupation and age and not forgetting learning to count to 100 in Japanese – all in 50 minutes!

Another session run by the Intelligence Corps focused on how languages are used in the Army and we played a matching game with the Russian alphabet and bingo with the numbers in Farsi!  There was a fun, interactive session where we learnt British sign language from Total Communications and a challenging lesson on computer programming.

Thank you to Wellington College for hosting a very interesting and useful day!

Afternoon Tea and Maths

A group of Year 11 students and their parents attended an 'Afternoon Tea & Maths' session with Mr Johnson.  During the afternoon tea, the students and parents looked at exam hints, tips and most importantly, looked at time management within exams.

We will be holding another session early Spring.

Thank you to Mr Johnson and The Maths Department
