Live in Woking
The Manhattan Project: Live @ HMV Woking
On Thursday 7th September a group of Winston students had their public debut performance at HMV Woking as The Manhattan Project. The Manhattan Project is made up of Y11 students with Joel as the lead singer/guitarist, Sam on lead/rhythm guitar, Harry on bass and Abi on drums/backing vocals. They have a classic Britpop sound along the likes of Oasis and Blur. The band performed 7 songs, 6 of which were originals with just 1 cover song. Joel did a superb job of fronting the band and was hardly phased when a string snapped, and he needed to change the string mid set! His response to the audience was ‘Sorry for the wait but I can’t choose when a string decides to snap!’. There was a lively crowd watching them, made up of friends, family and the general public, all who cheered loudly in appreciation after each song. It was so fantastic to see a talented group of Winston students, who had booked and organised the gig themselves, performing outside of school. We look forward to seeing them perform in our Band Night at the end of November.

Celebrating Diversity
The Paper Aeroplane Assembly
You may remember that Mrs Johnson-Walker gave an assembly, in March, that involved each student writing on a piece of paper something special about themselves. They then made it into a paper aeroplane and threw it across the hall for others to read. The aim was to remind everyone that we are all part of Winston but we bring something special to our school.
The message was 'I too am Winston but I am proud to be...'
All the planes were collected and their content typed so that when the planes were folded the message was clear.
I asked Mrs Jones, our Discovery Space Manager, if we could create an art installation with the planes. This has taken a lot of work and time but the piece now stands in our main entrance.
Thank you to Mrs Jones, Mrs Sims and Mrs Duff for their creativity and hard work to bring this project to an amazing conclusion.
If you come into reception, please find a few minutes to read some of the messages from our students. It makes you proud to be part of Winston.
