Year 11 Building Confidence Together

 Year 11 Revision

Mr Fisher & Mrs Turner's Year 11 students joined forces as they prepare for their next English Literature examination.

Students are working hard revising and they are sharing their knowledge, ready to apply it to their practise questions.

They've come out of their exam earlier in the week feeling confident.

If they keep up this focus, they will be 'unsinkable, absolutely unsinkable.'

Village Fete Maths

"All the fun of Binomial Theorem"

Year 7 students tested their metal against the Year 10 GCSE Statistics class, who designed a village fete side show using the Binomial Theorem.
The first mention of the binomial theorem was in the 4th century BC by a famous Greek mathematician by name of Euclids. The binomial theorem states the principle for expanding the algebraic expression (x + y)n expressing it as a sum of the terms involving individual exponents of variables x and y. Each term in a binomial expansion is associated with a numeric value which is called coefficient.  Reference Cuemath

Caught Being Good!

 Rewarding Success

Over 130 year 9 students were invited to a Celebration Movie and popcorn last Thursday during period 4c and 5.  They watched Ready Player One.

Students were selected through their form tutors and the Year Team.  The criteria included attendance at school, punctuality to lessons and recognition for the positive achievement points for good learning behaviours!

It was lovely to have so many of the year group together and we are planning to run some more celebration events before the year is through.

Street Food

 Cooking Club

This term in Cooking Club, we are embracing the theme of Street Food, and one of our highlights was making churros. Students loved piping and frying the dough before dusting it with cinnamon sugar, learning new skills along the way. It dough-lighted everyone to explore this classic treat, and the crispy, sweet results were definitely worth the effort! We still have 2 spaces left for our next class if you feel like making naan-wiches ;) Please register in R13 with Mrs Cookson.

Filleting Chicken

 Learning New Skills

"The Winston Catering Team has once again demonstrated an excellent range of skills for our Year 10 Food Preparation and Nutrition students by teaching them to break down and fillet a whole chicken. Students developed respect for ingredients, improved their knife skills, and engaged thoughtfully in discussions about where their food comes from. As our resident vegetarian, Avanthika took on the mammoth task of learning how to tourné vegetables instead.

Next week, students will be transforming chicken portions into a food‑truck‑style meal, helping them prepare for their final coursework in Year 11."

Innovate with Fabric

 Year 7 Pencil Case Project

We’ve wrapped up another fantastic Year 7 Textiles project – and what a brilliant journey it’s been! This term, students have been busy designing and making their very own pencil cases, and the results are as creative and individual as they are.
For many, this was their very first experience using a sewing machine, and it’s been impressive to see how quickly they’ve built confidence. There were definitely a few challenges along the way, but the resilience and determination shown by the group has been outstanding.
The project kicked off with tie-dye, which students created for the back panels of their pencil cases. They didn’t stop there – taking the experimentation home, trying out natural dyes using fruits, vegetables, and even teas. Some of the colour results were… unexpected, but all part of the fun and learning!

For the front panels, students used transfer crayons to bring their ideas to life. Their imaginations really ran wild – we saw everything from country flags and animals to florals, fire and ice themes, and even a very memorable carrot design.
As their skills developed, students practised using the sewing machines with decorative stitches before moving on to applique work. Cutting one panel into strips and applying it accurately was a great test of the techniques they’d learned so far.

Zips were the final big challenge, and this is where the classroom community really shone. It was wonderful to see students supporting one another, sharing tips, and stepping up as “Textiles ambassadors” to help their peers. could move forward confidently to complete their final pieces.
The finished pencil cases speak for themselves – creative, colourful, and full of personality. This is an amazing year group who have truly embraced every challenge thrown their way.
I’m already looking forward to seeing what they go on to create in Year 8. Well done, everyone!

Kangaroo Maths Challenge

 Success In Maths

We had six year 9 students take part in the Grey Kangaroo Maths Challenge and five year 11 students take part in the Pink Kangaroo Challenge. This is a massive achievement for these students, having achieved gold in the Intermediate Maths Challenge. It was a great way to celebrate the gifted year 11's before they start their GCSE's, and to see the future gifted KS4 students in our year 9's

The results were as follows:

Year 9 - 1 x gold, 2 x silver, 2 x bronze

Year 11 - 3 x gold, 1 x bronze

The Junior Maths challenge also took place on Wednesday the 29th April for the year 7's and 8's. I am excited to see the results, and celebrate all our great mathematicians

PS - I tried my best to get them to all smile, but was unsuccessful
