2015 Learning Partnership Student Conference

We welcomed the Student Councils from Collingwood, Kings International and BDB to Winston on Thursday for a student voice conference.  The students were provided with a number of opportunities to share their experience of being on  a school council and the impact that they have made.  They then re-grouped and began to plan some activities that they could take back to their own schools.  Each school council learnt something that they would be able to introduce into the way they work in their own school.  Winston students are considering how to link more regularly with the Senior Leadership Team to share and develop ideas for the benefit of students.

Thank you to Ms Gomm at BDB for instigating the idea and to everyone who participated in such a productive morning.

Christmas at Winston Part 1

Christmas At Winston๐ŸŽ…

We were very grateful to receive a donation of two magnificent Christmas trees.  I have placed one in our main entrance and one in the library.  They make a splendid addition to our celebrations.

Christmas Lunch ๐ŸŽ„

Thank you to Catering Academy for a super Christmas lunch.  Everyone enjoyed a traditional Christmas meal and looked great in their paper hats!

Rehearsing for the Christmas Concerts ๐ŸŽ„

Mr Drake was busy, after school on Wednesday, taking the orchestra through a number of pieces in preparation for the Winter Concert.  As you can see the Churchill Suite is too small for the orchestra now and we about to start fund raising to double the size of the space and ensure that it is a purpose built space for the Music Department.  If you can help in any way please contact Mr Phillips, our School Business Manager. s.phillips@wcsc.org

Learning Beyond the Classroom

Winston at King's College

'On Monday 26th Year 10 GCSE Latin students were invited to attend a lecture by classicist Tom Holland on contemporary misconceptions of Ancient World religions at King's College University. We enjoyed an interesting insight historical contexts of ancient Greek and Roman culture which will support our reading later on in the GCSE Latin course, in what was for many of us our first experience in a university style lecture.
One of the most interesting things we learned the notion of 'cyclum', the idea that a story lasts the cycle of living memory until it is lost forever.'

The lecture was hosted by Classics for All, a charity that supports Classics teaching in state schools across the country, and continues to support Winston as we broaden and strengthen the Latin curriculum offered to students at KS3 & 4. Mr Fisher and Hashir Ashraf spoke to patrons about the support that the school has received and the value that our students place on the learning of Latin and the Classics.

Coffee Art

Students preparing for their Barista Coffee qualifications, enjoyed a session on coffee art, the results of which you can see below.

Widening Participation Programme

As part of their Widening Participation Programme, the University of Surrey were invited to Winston Churchill School to deliver a Science workshop that focused on DNA to a selection of Year 9 students.

The workshop involved learning about the structure of DNA, where it is found and how it might become damaged. Students then had the opportunity to get hands on and practically extract DNA from a strawberry using a method provided to them. To finish, students then got to compare how genetically similar they are to other living organisms and how statistics could be misleading.

It was a great introduction to DNA, which all Year 9’s are currently learning about in their Biology lessons. It also provided them with an insight into Biosciences and the career options that can lead on from it.

Celebrating the Arts

Arts Awards Evening

We all enjoyed a lovely and inspiring evening on Thursday, celebrating the successes of our students in Art, Music and Drama.  Students from across the school were awarded for their resilience, creativity, performances and outstanding contributions.  Unlike many other schools the Arts continue to flourish at Winston, with a significant increase in participation and the drive for diversity and excellence.  Children join Winston not realising what they are capable of and we provide them with the opportunity to find their passion and to be successful.

Thank you to everyone for making this evening so memorable.
