The End of the Academic Year

The End of My First Year

This has been an interesting and demanding year.  I have thoroughly enjoyed every minute of being the Headteacher of The Winston Churchill School and I am looking forward to September to continue the journey from good to outstanding.
The staff and students of Winston have been quick to rise to every challenge presented to them throughout the year and I want to thank them for their commitment and determination to be the best that they can be.

We have said goodbye to several members of staff and thanked them for the contribution they have made to the students at Winston.  This includes Mrs Ward(Textiles), who has been a teacher at Winston for 35 years, Mrs Linehan(Head of Learning Support), Mrs Harvey(English), Mr Scrivener(Year Leader), Mrs Rothenburg(Art), Mr Brown(Maths), Ms Godfrey(PE), Ms Lund(PE), Mr Duell(RE), Mr Pohlman(Music), Mrs Sewell(Latin), Mrs Thomas(English), Mr Goosen(PE), Mrs Blakey(LSA), Louisa Reynolds(LSA), Mr Owino(ICT), Mrs Anderson(Home/School Link Worker), Mrs Parfitt(Textiles).    All have left for reasons of retirement or promotion and we wish everyone success in their future lives.

Then there is, of course, Mr Davis.  He and his family are taking the huge step of moving abroad to teach in Abu Dhabi.  Mr Davis has been at Winston for 17 years and has most recently been Deputy Head, with a focus on curriculum and data.  He has made an enormous difference to the school and been a tremendous support to me in my first year at Winston.  His legacy is definitely the new school day, which he will not be here to experience.  He will be remembered for the significant contribution he has made to the school, his commitment to meeting the needs of students and their parents and for always being first in line to eat the cakes at meetings!!

Mr Davis on duty for the last time.

The Borneo Expedition

The Borneo expedition left Winston at 6.30am on Thursday 24th July for four weeks, under the leadership of Miss Howe.  We wish them well as they enjoy this amazing opportunity and I will ensure that you receive a report on the experiences of the students.

The School Site

The school site is having a make-over this summer, in preparation for the new school day.  Science labs are being replaced, fire doors changed, a new bell system installed, flooring is being replaced and there will be some decoration of classrooms.  One maths room is also having a make-over to try to increase the size of the room, using the space more effectively.  If successful, funds permitting, the aim will be to roll this out along the top corridor of the main building.  The sports centre roof is being repaired, the canteen walls surfaces are being replaced and the PE office is being extended to develop an improved and safer working environment.  All of this work is being co-ordinated by our Site Manager, Mark Hill and I will try to provide up-dates throughout the summer break so that you can see the progress being made.

The New School Year

I am now looking forward to the new school year and the opportunity that it brings to move the school forward.

There are a number of new staff starting in September.  Governors and the Senior Leadership Team have taken the time to ensure that we have recruited only the best people for students at Winston.  We welcome them to our school and look forward to working with them.  My letters home to parents have named some of the new staff and a full list will appear in this blog later this summer.  There will also be a new cohort of Year 7 students, who are eagerly anticipating life at their new school.

I wish you and your families a enjoyable and relaxing summer.  I trust that the students are taking the time to experience learning beyond the classroom in a safe way. Thank you for your support.
