New Year; Great News!

Outstanding Performance at Winston

I am delighted to share with you some very exciting news regarding the performance of students at Winston.  Government data arrived just before Christmas stating that we have:
a value added score of 1017.

A score of 1000 is expected by the Department for Education but we have achieved 17 points over that figure, demonstrating that students have made better than expected progress.  Staff and students are to be congratulated for this excellent outcome.
This information will be available to the public via the DfE performance tables which will be released later this year.  Through these tables it is possible to compare the outcomes of all schools both local and national; although it is probably worth pointing out that that the most informative comparisons will be those made when looking at similar schools.

Exceptional Work

Archie produced an exceptional piece of homework for RE.
Mr McCleish said that it was the most impressive piece of work he has seen for this topic in the last three years.

Lego League Competition

Our trip to the First Lego League Competition did prove to our Yr 8 team that ‘everything is awesome, everything is cool when your part of a team’.

On Monday 15th December a team of yr 8 students made their way to Reading University to take part in the First Lego League competition. We arrived and launched straight into a series of different challenges. In their first challenge the students need to split into 2 sub teams, the first sub team created an object out of lego then only by talking over a divide the other sub team needed to recreate the model exactly. David Bindschedler was the star of this task, he gave precise and clear instructions. The model was perfect. The team then had 3 rounds of Lego robot challenges. They had to design their robot and then program the robot to perform a series of tasks. Our second round scored high points and no penalties. Corey Gair, Nishant Vats, James McNamara and Francis Parker were our chief designers and programmers. Matthew Woodall put his creative skills to good use with the Apprentice task; he created ‘Billy’ our team mascot. Finally the team worked together with their presentation and robot design talks. Additional members included Zak Kingsford, Jamie Harding, Dominic Buocik and Oliver Coulston. Well done to the team!

Year 9 Students Visiting a Beauty Salon

Some of our students have the opportunity to take a Beauty Therapy course as part of their Key Stage 4 programme.  These students went to see a real working salon as part of the decision making process.
