Student Achievement

Winston Student: Scott Sussex Off to Harvard

Scott Sussex wins place at Harvard University on Sutton Trust US Programme
Scott Sussex, 17, from Chertsey who is completing his A levels at Godalming College, has won a place and a financial aid package to study at Harvard after participating in the Sutton Trust’s US Programme run in partnership with the US-UK Fulbright Commission.
Last summer, Scott competed with 2,200 applicants to win one of 175 places on the summer school programme where he spent a week at Yale University and visited Harvard. The programme also provides intensive support, delivered by the US-UK Fulbright Commission over a number of months before and after the US visit, which covered admission tests, college choices and the application process.

Scott’s academic success is impressive, teaching himself Maths A level while still at The Winston Churchill School. At Godalming College he completed a Further Maths A level in one year together with 4 other AS level courses and will complete 4 A levels this year and an Extended Project Qualification. One of these A levels will be the Additional Further Maths A level and Scott will be one of only 50 students in the country each year to complete it.

Scott gives his time freely, supporting and mentoring other students in Maths and Science and volunteering at the local hospital whilst also holding down a Saturday job. He has recently turned his attention to memory training and has recently taken part in the Spanish Memory Championships.
Everyone at Winston congratulates Scott on his success.

 Public Speaking Competition

For the first time, Winston Churchill entered two public speaking teams in the Intermediate age group (11-14) of the Rotary Club's annual Youth Speaks competition. We have several very talented speakers in Year 9 and it has been a privilege to work with them in preparation for the event, held at Hoebridge School last week.

The teams were divided by gender which added an additional 'in-house' competitive edge. The 'Girls' Team' were runners up in a field of six teams. Anika Choudhury penned and delivered a very entertaining 6 minute speech entitled 'Hollywood, we want our books back!' Caitlin Harvey was a very confident Vote of Thanks and Fiona Stalker won the prize for the best Chairperson of all six teams.

The main speech for the 'Boys' Team' was written and presented by Ben Moore. He posed the question 'Is the era of drug-ruled sport really over?' His speech on this highly topical subject was exceptionally well delivered and he was ably assisted by Thomas Newton (Chairperson) and Thomas Walgrove (Vote of Thanks).

I would like to congratulate the students on their commitment, despite their busy, extra-curricular schedules. We are already planning next year's entry where we intended to take the winners AND runners up spots!
