Cultivating our World

 Earth Day Collaboration with Drama

Today, 22nd April, marks Earth Day, and our Year 8 Drama students rose to the challenge by creating scenes that focused on protecting our planet and exploring the consequences of human actions. As part of their introduction to Brecht and non-naturalistic theatre, students experimented with the use of placards to communicate clear messages directly to the audience and breaking the 4th wall.
By combining factual information with storytelling, the students successfully raised awareness of key environmental issues, including fast fashion, food waste, deforestation, and single-use plastics. Some groups devised news-style broadcasts to present hard-hitting facts, while others explored every day actions we do which have long-term consequences.

The creativity and social awareness shown by Year 8 was excellent, and the lesson demonstrated how drama can be a powerful tool for education and can spread awareness for the planet.

Celebrating Gardening Success!

Winston Churchill School and its students have just been in receipt of their Level One Certificate in the RHS School Gardening Awards.

To achieve this, they had to demonstrate:
Whilst working with students we have heard the most wonderful statements really illustrating how important this project is to them and the wider school community:
"This can really help the students who are getting lots of behaviour points because they can't sit still; it can help them relax."
"We have spent a lot of time working on the project and we are learning lots of practical skills and I intend on doing gardening or construction later in life"
"I have learnt how to take responsibility and manage a task. I have learnt how to team work and encourage other people. I also have a place to see new wildlife"
Students have spent considerable time and care creating new raised beds with salvaged wood and the allotment really is starting to look like an allotment now! This week our potatoes will be going in the ground and our broad beans are flowering. Our onions are settled in nicely and our fruit is really starting to take off.

We are almost ready to submit for their Level Two Certificate for the RHS School Gardening Awards so watch this space!
We are really grateful to the RHS School Gardening initiative and for their comprehensive resources; it has given us real purpose and drive to achieve; caring for our environment and our wellbeing in the process.
Congratulations to all students involved.
