Black History Month & Chelsea FC Foundation
Last month in celebration of Black History Month and in collaboration with the Chelsea FC Foundation, pupils completed a series of activities in form time focused on the theme of ‘Iconic Shirts: What We Wore’.
Form groups completed a quiz on iconic shirts at Chelsea FC and discussed the significance and impact that football shirts can have. Some of the responses from KS3 included:
· ‘Unites a community and removes perceived differences’
· ‘It is a way of finding common ground with strangers – sparks conversation’
· ‘Promotes inclusivity and shows people are on your team’
· ‘When you put on the shirt, everyone is part of the same family’
Pupils were then asked to design their own ‘iconic shirt’ for Chelsea FC, focused on highlighting the importance of Black History Month and representing unity and identity. Two winners were chosen, and this was a very hard decision as we had so many fantastic entries!
Below is selection of the shirt's pupils designed including the winning entries! Well done to everyone who took part in the challenge.
Remembrance Day & South Asian Heritage Month
This month to commemorate Remembrance Day and in connection with the Royal British Legion, Mr Matheson (History Head of Department) ran a series of assemblies focused on the theme of civilian and military service.
Linking with Mr Matheson’s assemblies pupils explored the idea of service through the anniversary of South Asian Heritage Month. Pupils completed an activity in tutor time, exploring the service and sacrifice of just some of the men and women from South Asia, or of South Asian descent, in protecting all communities across our country, looking at stories from WWI, WWII and more. One of these stories looked at the service of Mohinder Singh Pujji who as part of group of 24 Indian RAF pilots were selected to train in England. He rose to rank of squadron leader and received the Distinguished Flying Cross, for gallantry and devotion to duty during WWII.
Pupils also discussed the importance of recognising and remembering everyone’s service and sacrifice, some of the KS3 responses included:
· ‘Because they sacrificed their lives to help future generations. Their engagement showed their bravery, and we might not have lived in the same world we have today.’
· ‘It is important because they contributed to the war, were fearless, selfless and they sacrificed their lives. Some of them left their homes and families to help. They didn't have to help but they wanted to.’
· ‘In the past, there have been some unremembered names of people who have sacrificed themselves. It is important to remember everyone who has offered their service.’
· ‘Without the sacrifice of all the soldiers-many cultures would not seek to exist in Britain.’
· It is important to remember everyone's service and sacrifice because everybody is equal, and they have all helped out in their own way.’
· ‘Everyone played a part in the World Wars so everyone should be contributed/credited because if it wasn't for each individual we might not have won.’
