Winston Book Week Chapter 1

 We Love Books!

This week has been Winston Book Week, a week to celebrate reading and encourage students to read a range of genres and texts. We've had author visits, breakfasts in the Library and even a theatre trip!
To kick off the week, we had the Bookworm Breakfast in the Library which is something we do every year during Book Week. It's a chance for the Library assistants and those avid readers that are always in the Library to enjoy a hot chocolate and pastry during form time while they chat all things books. It's also a way for Miss Dodds to say thanks to those students who help the Library to run!
Here are some of the students enjoying their hot chocolate whilst browsing some new books about to hit the Library shelves...

On Tuesday evening, a group of 40 Year 7 students got on a coach to London to go and watch the theatre production of Matilda the Musical. It was an absolutely fantastic show and the students were all incredible. It was fun to sing along to the songs made popular by the recent film release. The trip filled up so quickly that there is another running at the end of March which we are looking forward to.

From Monday-Wednesday this week during break time staff having been reading extracts from their favourite book. We've had extracts from Julia Donaldson's The Highway Rat, Bill Bryson's A Short History of Nearly Everything and J.R.R. Tolkien's The Hobbit. Students have really enjoyed listening to members of staff from a range of different departments read aloud. One student told me 'It's nice to just have someone read to you sometimes'. I think students of all ages really appreciate listening to someone read aloud so this is something we will be running every year.

Coming up in the 2nd half of this week is our 2 author visits - Kirsty Applebaum for Year 7 on World Book Day (Thursday 2nd March) and Andy Briggs for Year 8 on Friday 3rd March. We are very much looking forward to hearing all about the author's work and their journey into writing. Look out for a blog post on those 2 visits coming soon...
